I'm looking for a new digital camera. My old 2mp camera from 4 years ago isn't cutting it anymore. I'd like to get something that will give me pretty high quality images. I was looking at the new canon eos digital rebel. It looks very nice, but i'd prefer to not spend that much if I can get similar performance from a less expensive model. The nikon coolpix 5700 was one that I noticed seemed pretty good, and was a bit less expensive (plus the current $100 rebate). Anyone have any good or bad experiences with this camera? Or does anyone have any other suggestions? Would i be happier in the long run spending more for the digital rebel? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

if you already have Canon SLR cameras then yes you would be better in the long run getting the rebel ... because you will have lens's that fit it already ....

we have one of the coolpix 5700 at work as a backup camera ... me personally i really dislike it ... i don't like the feel of it ... it does take okay photos ... but i prefer my Olympus C-5050 (the 5060 is out now) ... a better 'feel' to it .. and better quality shot ...

i use a Nikon D1 for my main camera at work ... and even with the age of the camera ... i still love a digital SLR over other digital cameras ... if for no other reason but the fact that it takes the photo the instant you push down the button ... lol .. that and i already had about 5,000 in other lens that were Nikon mounts...

thanks flea, i wasn't aware that olympus came out with the 5060. i'll have to check it out. To further clarify, a few of the features that interest me are good zoom, ability to take good macro shots, and good performance in low light. Have you had a chance to use these features of either camera? thanks again!

yeah the C-5050 is my backup camera that i carry with me in the car for if the D1 or its batteries fail while i am on assignment ... it does GREAT performance in low to no light ... it uses its own light source to make sure everything is in focus before it takes the photograph ... the macro setting is nice as well ... (i dont use that feature to much tho so i can't give a full comment on it other then trying it out a few times) ... the 5050 has 4X optical zoom and it is great quality ... the digital zoom on the camera sucks tho ...

it does have a built in noise filter you can turn on which helps a lot in the low light situations ... and leaving the camera in the auto mode most all the time i have not had it disappoint me once with a bad photograph .. even when in a tricky light situation ( flourescent and halogen lighting .. still get good skin qualitys and color )

the 5700 i have tried to use a few times in low light situations and it has failed most every time .. either i have to reshoot the photo numerous times to get everything in focus .. or have to recompose the shot using what light is available to illuminate the subject enough so it will focus good (have even use a flashlight to get it to focus for a photo) ... the zoom is okay as well ... didn't like the feel of the camera enough to use it long tho ... any camera that i pick up and it feels like i am about to break just holding it i tend to not use to often ... my D1 and the 5050 have ben dropped, hit against walls, hit against cars. and still work perfectly (other then one lens on the D1 that was damaged while i was being tackled at a football game .. but that is a different story)

that photograph was taken with the 5050 in a low light room, the cat was just opening her eyes because of the red light it uses to focus when it took the photo ... i did nothing to brighten the photograph up ... just cropped, sized and added a border.

cool, thanks again flea. i'm going to look further into the 5050 and 5060. Are there any significant advancements in the 5060?

well the main thing the 5060 offers ... it has 4X optical zoom compared to just 3x .. it will take photos quicker then the 5050 (less of a startup time, plus able to do 3fps bursts with a lower lag time beteen pressing button and photo taken) ...

it has more digital zoom as well but i dislike digital zoom

it is also able to take a wider angle photo
