I agree that the the first one looks fine. To me, it seems that, since you lose your field of view, transforming a photo in such a way negates the point of having used a wide-angle lens in the first place. Though I should say that I typically use a wide-angle lens deliberately for such an effect. If correcting the "distortion," then cropping the image down to focus on the subject is what you're looking for, there's certainly nothing wrong with it.
