It was the Romans' development of arches for their baths to create large open spaces without columns that led up to creating domes, culminating in the huge dome on the Pantheon in Rome. Brunelleschi rediscovered this technology and used it to design and build what is still the largest dome in the world, on the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. He did this in the early 15th century, WITHOUT USING WOODEN FORMS TO HOLD UP THE DOME WHILE IT WAS BEING BUILT!
