So yeah. How much traffic do you people get?

Not just ozone, but people like me, the three million sites that sit in the corner, hoping to someday be a fad like Mahir "Goddam I'm a stud" Cagri.

So yeah, I get anywhere from 30-100 hits a day.

whee.

I get hit about 500,000 times a day, somebody help me. It's cause of Al Gore, I was making fun of him, so now he hires his alien friends to beat me.

I don't get a lot of trafic around my place, with the spaceshuttles blocking the street and all.

Btw, I never likes Mahir =P

Al Gore is a bastard like that, what with his claiming to have invented the web and his random beatings of those who speak ill of him.

Meanwhile, Bush is from Texas.

I'm voting for Nader.

Nadar caused car insurence to go up 40% in California. He'll regulate you guys to death. Browne is a better choice, if you're gonna vote for a 3rd party that is..

Hey, *I'm* from Texas!

But, to get get back to the question, are we talking hits altogether or, more specifically, page views? Right now, I get about 80,000 to 100,000 page views a month, although in April I got a little over 340,000 thanks to a lucky mention of one of my areas in Yahoo Magazine.

Not bad, I suppose, for something I've done in my spare time. But, when I move back to **Texas** in a couple of months, I plan to put a little more effort into it and make a little mad money from my collaboration with Bla-bla.com.

The network I work for gets a little over 3 million page views a month, which equates to about 250,000 unique visitors given our IP tracking as such. 12 page views per visitor isnt bad, but we'd like for it to be a lot higher of course <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

edit: fixing signature.. this is my first post on this forum. *grin*

OK; just a brief ramble on hits, visitors, and page views, for those readers who sometimes get confused. (I sometimes get confused. Lies, damn lies, and statistics! :-)

HITS -> Hits are every single call for every single bit on your website. A typical front page has an index.html, one hit, a background, another, 3-4 images, hit hit hit hit, you get the picture.

VISITORS -> There are several ways to calculate a "unique" visitor. Some softwares will log all the IP numbers to visit your site in the course of a day, if they're different, they're a unique "visitor". So, someone visiting first at 8:00 am, then later at 11:59 pm would still count as only one visitor. Some softwares will place the cut-off at only an hour, these packages will of course show more unique visitors. Sometimes, one of your unique "visitors" will be a cache server, which will save your page and images and serve it on to thousands of users (possibly!) AOL typically works this way, as do many ISPs. If it's really important to me I'll request my raw logs from my server host and run several packages on them, the visitor count can vary quite a bit depending on the algorythm you use.

PAGE VIEWS -> This is one of the more interesting statistics, as it is usually pretty accurate. This is the actual amount of HTML pages viewed, not hard to understand, right? Compare this with the HITS to find out how many images/includes your typical page contains. Compare it with your VISITORS to find out how many pages a typical user views.

There are a bunch of other things that a hit-tracking software can use, but trust one that is run off of the raw server logs the most. This is typically run on the UNIX server that hosts your machine, you'll see these reports generated once a day. You can also request your raw logs and run any number of commercial tracking proggies on them. "Hit counter" services, typically smal images inserted into your page can give you another level of information, but take it with a grain of salt, they don't always count a visit before folks have moved on!

For my part, especially after the whole PHONG episode (still unresolved!) I'm starting to split my site into multiple domains, each with it's own special arrangement with my serving partners. Dreamhost is turning onto my favorite partner here, I have six different domains hosted with them now. www.handson.nu is the first big hunk of the OZONE site to "spin off" in this manner, I'll wait till the end of the month to se if they freak about the extra 5 gigs of traffic it's generated over the limit! <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif">

I'll repeat again, "There are 3 types of lies. Lies, damn lies, and statistics!"

LISTEN TO THE MAN!

Honestly, I have nothing but good things to say about Dreamhost. I started hosting the corporate DarkGarden Design site there a couple years back now, and in that time, I've enjoyed great service, and a solid host.

Yeah I know, I sound like the huckster supreme, but with the number of hosts I've hadto deal with due to client sites, I'm always elated when I get to work with the guys from Dreamhost. Using the http Stats page for each Domain is SOOO nice in comparison to setting scripts, or dealing with server log files as well.

Okee...enough hawking Dreamhost for now....but I'll be back I tells ya.

Peter

Actually, my name comes from Tycho Brahe, a 16th century danish astronomer <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif"> My father used to tell me stories about all kinds of science and theory (he was a bit of a philosopher) and the tale of Tycho Brahe stuck as an interesting one, particularly because of a few strange quirks about him, including the fact that he lost a large portion of his nose in a duel, and thus wore a silver prosthetic nose for a large portion of his life. Fascinating man.

there's a little info about him here: http://www.nada.kth.se/~fred/tycho.html if you're interested.

Mikey-

Thanks much! My father is the most intelligent man I will ever have the pleasure of meeting, I feel it only right of me to include him in my online Nom de Plume <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

I dont personally have a site up yet, other than some hidden URLs I created and keep as reference, and/or as jump pages to search engines and such. I do however own my own domain, and part of the reason I am here at this forum is to bone back up on my webdesign in preperation for the development of my own site. Maybe I'll dust off a few old templates I've played with and post them here for some fun.

For now, most of my online work has been for a First Person Gaming community called GameKey, Inc. You can look at

http://www.unrealfiles.com
http://www.halflifefiles.com
http://www.gamekey.com/corporate

for 3 of my most recent projects. I dont have complete artistic freedom, but I certainly have 90% of it... which is enough in my book <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif"> There's a ton more out there, but as we all know, it gets lost in the ether pretty quickly. Who knows... maybe this forum will inspire me to create my personal domain once and for all!
