Preserved Topic: HELP! Windows explorer, directories, files????

Someone at work has just asked me what I thought was a simple question, however it's got me beat.
He want to print off all the filenames, and directory names contained in a certain folder on his hard drive. I thought there would be some way of doing it in Windows Explorer, but I can't see it.

Is there any way at all to do this?? Please help because it's bugging me and he is desperate to do it.

I don't know of a way to do it from Explorer. Sounds to me like you will have to go with the MS-DOS prompt. Navigate to the directory and use::
dir > lpt1:
or
dir > textfile.txt
and then edit textfile.txt to taste and print. That will give you files in the directory and the directories.

If you want files in the subdirectories as well, use the /s switch:
dir > textfile.txt /s

I've got a mickey mouse program I wrote in VB 5.0 laying around here some where that does just what your friend is looking for. But the MS-DOS prompt should be more than adequate.

Another way is to "drag and drop" the folder in question, onto an open browser window and view the individual files and programs in the browser window.
Click on "File" then "Print" and the rest should take care of itself.

It's a little easier than going to the DOS prompt or dropping entirely back to DOS.

Oh man, that method is even better. How do you know these things? I would have never tried that in a million years, (small exaduration)

I've always used drag and drop onto an open browser window to "error-check" for image transparency or color compatibility.

Accidently selecting and dropping a folder as opposed to a single file was a natural progression *L*

It's quite handy for checking your progress on unusual transparencies.
All that's needed is to click reload to get an up to date perspective on the effect.

Cold_Canuck, now that's cool. I've dropped individual files into a browser window, but I never would have thought about a folder. Damn, that's cool.

It's also handy for when I'm burning CDs and need more information about the images than the filename can pass on.

I burn a lot of CDs since I got screwed once (not backing up files), and I tend to have a lot of images since I do a lot of experimental stuff (who doesn't, right?).
Once I have a folder set aside so that burning the contents is easier, I also drag and drop that folder onto a browser window, then save that as an .htm document.
After reducing the size of the font, I then make notes beside each document's filename and file size, just a simple explanation of the file's content but better than what little info the filename provides.
It's then burnt onto CD along with all of the actual files.

Hey pretty cool advice there from the Canuck. Never thought of doing that.

But, now what am I going to do with this 8-inch stack of half-used notepads?

Scan them in as PDFs and burn 'em using Canuck's idea.
