Preserved Topic: Frustrated with my GIMP (Page 1 of 1)

Does anyone know any good graphic programs for linux besides the gimp? Or some good refrence sites for graphical work on linux, I just dedicated my PC to linux to serve some stuff, and now that i'm stuck in linux I'd still like to get some work done, especially since this is the puter with the 21" monitor <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif"> I guess this is a general call for help with linux based web creation. Oh yeah, does anyone know a good FAQ site for apache besides the official apache documentation? I guess thats enough questions for now.

At the moment i have Windows 98 and a just downloaded a bundle for windows that has Apache, PHP4, and MYsql. The instilation took less time then the download.
I think it's a good thing for unexperienced users (Like ME) because it can be easily uninstalled. I also ganked myself a free copy of Corel linux OS, and it funked up my "Pooter" and it had to reformat the HD.
As for Apache references i just picked up a book called professional Apache by peter Wainwright. It has a lot of stuff about cofiguring apache for your needs and administration for Apache. I suggest you check it out. That's just my 2 cents, keep in mind i'm a fan of books!

Well, if you can hang on for what may be a few months, or, sadly, a year...a little birdy told me that Adobe is looking at porting PS 6.0 for Linux.

Now, that could just be talk of course. Though, if I recall, there's a version of PS for UNIX isn't there? That should be a simple port job for the technically inclined to pull off. For now though, the GIMP is the only thing I've seen that's useful in Linux for graphic uses...though I've seen some AMAZING work come from the GIMP, so I'm not sure where the problem with it is coming in...possibly the new learning curve of it?

Nonetheless, I'd look into whether Adobe has ported versions for UNIX then...it's the closest thing to a solution that you might get.

Thanks for the replies, I've nothing against the gimp, its just a totally different system then PS and I don't really want to re-learn how to do everything(not that i know much about PS). People have reported getting Photoshop to run with WINE (http://www.winehq.com) but only older versions (3.*). Adobe hasn't ported PS to unix yet, least not that i could find. I'm serving using an application i wrote specifically for linux so running apache/etc in windows isn't an option. I'm gonna run over to local barnes and noble and look at some books now. sorry.. but you really don't have many options. either learn gimp or pray that photoshop does get ported over (though i wouldn't not my breath).

I have heard that there is a Windows emulator for Linux. From what I understand, it handles Windows better than Windows itself does. Hmmm... maybe it's a Windows emulator for Unix? I'm not sure, but it's worth looking into.

Hmm, I seem to remember that there *is* a good graphics program for UNIX machines, and it has a two letter acronym for a name. Hmm, VI? no, maybe XV? Hmm, that doesn't sound right. I should be learning this stuff this weekend, I just got a blank 'puter here next to me scheduled for Linux, and I haven't a clue as to where to begin, but strangely I'm not too intimidated. (OK, maybe a little!)

if you have half a brain and have been using computers for a while, then linux surely is no problem.

(this comes from someone that ran a slackware distro for some time, about three or four years ago)

i've never heard of a good windows emulator for linux... well there might be a decent one or two, but there's nothing superb or even on level with windows itself. sorry.

oh.. and doc, vi is a text editor. not sure what xv is, if anything.. but gimp is an amazing piece of software, use the force my son.

The one Doc is talking about is VMware. It is actually awesome. To be honest it isn't a windows emulator, you actually install windows in its own partition (I Think) and you can run it through Linux. I wouldn't recommend it as a great for PS but for example one of our engineers here at work uses it for Lotus Notes (our e-mail service) and for running our Content Management system.

Okies, I have windows 98 and photoshop already on the box, but untill i get my new linux box I have to use this box in linux because of a linux-specific persistant application that I wrote...

I believe all the windows emulators are commercial projects that cost lots of money, which I don't like to spend.

I'm comfortable with linux, just not the gimp <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">

I guess I will be using the laptop, time to spring for a trackball and real keyboard. Its good to be on a macintosh anyway. Thanks for all the replies.

Actually both VMware and WINE are open source projects (i.e. free) and work well. The other cool thing about VMware too is that if Windows does crash you can reboot your windows instance without rebooting the machine.

W.ine I.s N.ot an E.mulator and it doesn't work well with photoshop(at least not on my setup), and vmware costs like 300 dollars and isn't open source, unless I'm familiar with the wrong product, maybe you have a link I could look at? I must say I enjoy macintosh and linux a whole lot more then windows, and get a lot more work done, I can't wait for OS X to come out so i can get the best of both worlds.

Speaking of OS X... does anyone know when Apple will start bundling OS X with G4's? I'm in the mood to buy another G4 and would like to get it with OS X right out of the box.

BTW if you are frustrated with your GIMP may I suggest you drag your GIMP out by it's chain and give it a good beating. Perhaps you need to afix roach clips to your GIMPs nipples. Maybe you don't have your GIMPs chain tight enough. Give it a good yank!

Boudga: I would bet, and this is purely speculative, that OS X starts getting bundled with G4's early summer/late spring next year. Letting the off-topic betting begin. I should start a pool.

Umm back to the original topic of the GIMP I just found that you can actually manipulate it from the command line. Which makes me think. That would mean that you could actually write a perl script (or PHP whatever) that could actually creat images on the fly. That and some DHTML tricks would make a pretty cool website. Thinnk about it a site you can draw with.
