i had hinted earlier that i was going to build a new computer. well it looks like sometime next week or the week after i'll be ordering all my parts... i wanted to run the system by you guys and see if anyone has any input.

oh yeah, the system will be intended for photoshop and premiere pretty much.. i think i'll remain on this computer for internet and games and stuff and stuff.

cse : in win q500n
m/b : abit kt7-raid
cpu : amd athlon thunderbird 1ghz
mem : 512mb pc133 sdram
h/d : ibm deskstar 75 gxp 30gb
ibm deskstar 75 gxp 45gb (x2)
v/c : matrox g400max dualhead
s/c : creative soundblaster live! platinum
dvd : pioneer dvd-115 16x
mdm : creative modemblaster 56k
dsp : iiyama visitionmaster pro 450 19" (x2)
nle : canopus dvraptor w/ breakout box

yeah.. so uh, that bad boy looks like it'll run 4000$ (actually few hundred under that, but yah never know) and should serve my purposes alright...

anyone have any insights or recommendations on other or additional gear i might want to look into?

You're getting a modem? What's that? <g> If you're ever planning to get hooked up to a real network, I'd also recomend a nice 10/100Mbit ethernet card, you'll need it, its better to make room for it now. You're also going to be doing video, you may need some firewire/1394 ports as well? Sounds like a killer machine. We've been looking at some of the heavier PIII machines for our network, and have been leaning towards some of the dual-processor models. YMMV!

I'd pop for more RAM, I can suck up RAM in a matter of seconds with Photoshop. 512 just isn't enough.

I'd agree with F1. More RAM, more RAM. Also, what OS are you going to use. I run on W2000 right now and the dual head feature on the Matrox card doesn't work. No compatable drivers yet (Thought the Matrox people told me it would be ready March 2000, 7 months ago, still not here)
Also I didn't notive a CD burner on there. Working with video, being able to burn CD's is a blessing. Maybe you already have one, if not, look into it.

okay... well i wrote down a modem because that's all i can connect with around here. i already have network cards for this current computer and the new one though, just didn't write it down. the canopus dvraptor is the ie1***(firewire) port for my dv-camcorder. i was thinking of a cd-burner eventually, but i've never needed one before (and video isn't going to change that). windows98 is the operating system of my choice, because it's stable(ish, HAHAHA...) has full driver support, and 2k/me really don't offer me anything more that i need. as for ram... i WANT more, but i'm going to start with 512 and work from there.. especially since i have a feeling i'm going to switch this computer to dual cpu and DDR ram as soon as the boards become available in a few months.

Decide on the Raptor, eh? Good choice. Just be sure your video card has overlay so you can view the video on the screen. And making room for the upgrade to a second processor is a good idea if you think you might want to upgrade to real-time video. Believe me, the rendering becomes a real pain after awhile.

krypton: wacom tablets, yeehaw! i personally like wacom tablets, but i can't really justify throwing down the money for one. we've got a few of the really BIG ones in a digital lab i work in sometimes, but all i do with them is practice my handstyle and shit... there are other guys out there that paint in photoshop and stuff with them, but i'm not really into that (yet).

the link for the dj site is... http://zerominuszero.net/jinjer/ ...and stuff. mind you that it's for a trance/ambient dj chick, not really music i'm into at all. she's totally lagging on me and there's more stuff i want to do with the site, but it's just sitting in limbo. oh well. i'd appreciate some input from you though.

i'd disagree with your statement of 'being an artist' versus 'selling yourself.' i've been in this argument so many times with professors and other artists and shit though, it's not even worth my time anymore..

that's a pretty decent burner you threw down, easy on the eyes and stuff... i don't see much stuff done in photoshop, i'm more into freights/walls/books of course. that's definitely a lot better than anything i've tried in photoshop though, hehe.

paint fumes and bladder problems go hand in hand... but you ever check out http://www.12ozprophet.com ? i used to lurk in the forums for a long time, but it started to get wack so i haven't been there in a few months. there were some people with big skills there, it was interesting. also check out http://www.graffiti.org/sins/main.html is you get a chance, joker and mune are my heroes, hehe.

alright, peace out and shit.. sorry for being a bitch.

That sounds similar to what i am planning to build, minus some of the cards and stuff. Otherwise i think it should suit you fine. Besides since you are the one building the puter, you can easily upgrade it if you need to.

Hey Mikey i was wondering if you have to make special considerations for a motherboard if you are going to use a 1 ghz processor. Do i need to buy a motherboad that is configured for a 1 ghz processor?

burwell: shouldn't be a problem with 1ghz processors... i can't think of any namebrand motherboards made in the last year that wouldn't support them. if you're still wondering though... what kind of motherboard do you have, or were thinking of getting? i can tell yah...

jestah: 1ghz yeah.. i might change the speed on the cpu actually, get a 900 one instead because they're so much cheaper. but i'll have to wait and see where things are standing in about two weeks. the macs are still cool, but i've heard some stuff about their potentially upcoming processors that is making me think i might buy one at the end of next year.

Mikey,
FWI if you decide to go dual processors, remember that W98 doesn't support that. Maybe you knew that already, maybe not. 1 year ago I built my own computer. I didn't know that. Lots of headaches later. Now I know.

ouch.. you said the dreaded "c-word."

i'm not talking about the u.s. president either, i'm talking about the horrible company known as "compaq."

if it makes you feel any better, the original pc i got was a compaq back in 92 or something... it's kind of what i learned on, though i still have nightmares about that piece of shit.

i just looked up the specs for the 2286 and it's definitely not pretty... 333mhz cyrix, 32mb ram... it's just rough.

i wouldn't even waste money on upgrading that thing, save your money and build a computer on your own instead when you have the funds.

sorry.

BTW I've been building my own systems for a while now and one resource I love is http://www.pricewatch.com

It's a comparison service for components. If you know exactly what you need its a great way to buy parts at the best price

yeah.. i used to go by pricewatch when i first started out, sometimes it's just such a hassle because of unscrupulous dealers though.

ssooo... http://www.resellerratings.com/ ...is a great companion to use with pricewatch.

using both of those usually yields great results... but i'm at the point now where i don't mind paying 10$ extra bucks for a component if i get to stick with the same people i've been buying stuff from for the past year or two.

That's ok Mikey. After a brief, but much needed period of crying, I decided to build my own puter. Looks like my purchase of photoshop is going to be delayed even longer! My system is basicly going to be like yours, but i'm am going to build it gradually, since my cash flow is limited. I think what i'll do is put all of the basic stuff in it at first, and then add the add-ons as i get the money.
