I just got my new books on PHP and MySQL, and my current host doesn't let me do PHP on their servers so I'm in search of a new one. I checked out Dreamhost and found out they offer a lot more for the same price as my current host. Can anyone give me any reasons pro or con not to use them (especially Doc)?

Thanks everybody!

Use them. I'll be putting my NEW baby up there sometime this year. They are well worth the investment. And from what I understand the Tech support is amazing.

They kick butt. No phone support but their email support is promised, and delivered, within 24 hours. Who wants to call anyhow when you can email right? Administration through their web panel is easy to pick up on and thorough in it's scope. Nothing bad to say at all and I don't think you'll hear anything negative.

edit: you're gonna have to sign for the code warrior plan ($35-$45) if you want MySQL support. PHP is available on all accounts.

Absolutely no negatives from my experience. The darn things worked so well, and the email support really works, the biggest problem is all the extras I ended up purchasing, 8 domains there now, with extra disk space for all. If nobody else has asked, put a "docozone" as your referer, and I'll get 10% of whatever you spend there as a credit! We tested one of Malin's domains there first, and since she refered me, she basically gets free webhosting for life! (I spend a lot, heh heh.)

You can actually get one of the $9.95/month accounts and add mySQL as an extra to any of the accounts for $6.95/month, that's the way to go to start. Upgrading your plan (which I have done twice) is relatively simple, the back-end admin tool is pretty sweet. I like these guys, they host all my sites now except the primary OZONE site, and I ain't moving that until I get some "special consideration", heh. (The bandwidth usage on that one is still pretty heavy, and VISI gives me no hassles about that, even though I equal about 5,000 regular users!)

* Expels large sigh of relief*

Thanks Doc for the great tip on making MySQL an extra for $6.95/month. When I read JK's post, it really let the wind out of my sails. I'm by no means ready to be in the 35.00 - 45.00 category for web hosting for my little site. I really want to start expanding my horizons, (and my chance at getting a job in this industry) hence my foray into PHP and MySQL, but can't really afford to spend that on web hosting just to post my tests. Your a life saver, and giving you a reference will be my pleasure!

Thanks for your input JK, and F1, due to your raves, I'm on my way to Dreamland.

I've got 3 accounts now with Dreamhost.

Doc, I put you down as a referrer on all 3 , but I didn't know how to list you, so I put as a referrer, "Doc Ozone". I'm not sure if you got credit for that, maybe I'll shoot them an e-mail about it.

My one concern:

I'm having one heck of a time setting up e-mail with them. I downloaded Eudora, but still can't figure it out!!!!!!

So now I have 3 domains, and three completed sites sitting on my hard drive, as yet not uploaded till I figure out how to do the mail thing !?!?!

Wanna help me on that one?

Other than that, Dreamhost seems to be the way to go.

Butcher---I'll be delving into PHP and MySQL soon as well---I'm hoping I can count on you (and vice versa) in learning this stuff.

It will be my pleasure heddaLettis, I just hope I will be able to help

From what I've read in some of your other post, your quite a bit more advanced than I already, but I'm looking foward to it.

Hi Hedda! Hmm, not sure if I got any credits for that or not, if a computer program matched them up it may not have realized that "Doc Ozone" == "DocOzone", heh.

I use the POP email for 3 of my accounts, it shouldn't be too hard to set up at all! The primary domain that I've wrapped many of the others under is "defaultcity.com", so when I check that mail, I set my incoming mail server as "pop.defaultcity.com", and send it my Dreamhost username and password. Your mail should be handled by the same machine that handles your FTP, so you should be able to use that hostname also. (In my example, "soto.dreamhost.com".) Drop me a note if you can't get this to work, I'll help you get hooked up. ( I always rate email as one of my top-5 internet services!)

That's all right JK, you clued me into something that I wasn't realizing at all. If it wasn't for you mentioning it, the other post from Doc might not have come along.

Thanks!

Yah, out of my 8 domains there, and 3 accounts, every one of them started as the cheapest available, and then was upgraded piecemeal. I can be a bit cheap, so I spent a whole bunch of time trying to figure out which way might be cheaper, adding and subtracting, etc... Once, when I upgraded to a plan that made something I had spent money on last month a free option, I wrote them a note and asked if we could maybe make an adjustment? Within 2 hours I get an email back, eliminating the charge, crediting me for the money, and they found something else I shouldn't be paying for, and credited me for that too! Don't be shy about asking if you think you should get something else for free, they will fix.

Yup, they're excellent like dat. I'm on the cheapest plan that doesn't allow TELNET access. I wanted to password protect a directory with htaccess so I emailed to ask if there was an adder for that. They said no, I'd have to upgrade to the next account but they'd be happy to protect the directory for me for free. I don't know who in the world is making their customer service policies but man, it's refreshing. *Always* a *positive* response in 24 hours or less.
