I have a question that I have never really thought about before.
I have been asked to create a site for a guy I know through another mate of mine. Anyway this guy, (who builds boat trailers) has bought two domain names (.co.uk and .com). My question is this. . .

What will he have to do with regard to hosting two domain names (does he have to pay twice to host them both) and therefore do I have to upload the site to both domains and consequently update both sites when he wants any changes made ???

Or do you create two splash pages that both point to only ONE main site hosted under one of the domain names, which at least would mean not updateing both sites when he changes anything??????

Are there any other options that my feeble brain cannot come up with??

What is the usual thing to do here???

Please help me out I know I'm stupid but be kind. . . . .

OK, generally speaking, most places will insist you pay for the hosting of two *domain names*, as opposed to the actual *web hosting*, with a separate virtual host for each. I would probably set both domain names to point to exactly the same place, and then handle the different branding for each site through some SSI customization, save yourself one of the costs this way. Remember, you want 2 domain hotsings, and one "virtual host".

Places charge for hosting both domains? Really?

My company doesn't do that. We DO charge for the DNS configuration for each domain (a one-time charge). But we charge by the space and not the domain. Interesting! With us, you could have 400 domains all pointing to the same HTDOCS area. You'd pay for the space you want, plus the one-time DNS charge ($25 per domain). So, once you pay the DNS cost, your hosting costs don't change.

<scratches head>Ya know, we could make a lot more money if we charged by hosted domain.....</scratches head>

Ah, that's actually an old model, seems to me. Most of the rates I remember for that were along the lines of $30 anually, so you're not missing out on too much. (Hmm, let's se, 400 domains, at $25/per, that would be nice!
