So my Father and I decided to do some retro game swapping. I traded him Hexen][ for Diablo. I never played Diablo when it first came out, it just never hooked me.
So I get home tonight and install Diablo. When I go to play the game, I get this high pitch whine coming from my monitor. I know this can't be good, it sounds like the Vienna Boys Choir with there testicles in a vice grip to give you an idea, anything that sounds like this cannot be good. I play around with my refresh rates, thinking this may be the cause of this painful noise. Nope, that doesn't work. I really don't know much about hardware, I can make pretty pictures tho. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do? It's a Princeton Graphics EO70 monitor, I have the last drivers they made for it, and I'm running Win98.

I dunno... I had a similar problem once. I'd say try changing the refresh rate, but obviously that ain't workin'. Diablo runs at 640 by 480, right? Or... What resolutions? Does this happen in all the resolutions when you're playing Diablo, or does it happen when you run other games at 640?

I have the same problem running "Doom" on my monitor F1... I have an older type Magnovox 17" (an ex show model straigth off the shelf) and I have always presumed it was the monitors age etc... however I did have a tech head pop over once and he rekoned it was my video card buzzing and not the monitor??? I have not had a fix yet , cept that I got bored of Doom.. lol...... try changing your resolution on the fly and see if the noise changes... you might find it is not the monitor but your vid card making the noise.... on this machine I have a no name 4meg onboard video thingy....

sorry not be able to give you a definitive answer

Well Diablo only lets you play at one rez. It looks more like 720x480 than 640x480, remember this is a 1997 game.

As for it being my video card, I know it's not, my box is about 4' from my monitor, and it's on the floor. So I know where the sound is coming from. I did try changing the rex on the fly, as well as quit, change rez, restart, play. I tries change rez, and refresh. No luck there. It's probably something I don't know anything about. BTW Doom and Doom ][ play great with no whine. I still love Doom and Doom][.

Great guess tho guys. I really appreciate the effort.

Hacking, beating, killing, maiming, shooting, and generally blowing the fuck outta beasties gets boring? Since when? Video games are based on what we do, eat meat and violence. It's what damn near every courty in this world is founded on. It could be worse, I could start a renegade religion, speak in tounges, get people to donate tons of cash to *me*, join the post office, and kill off a McDonalds. But thats an awful lotta work. Repeditive video games are so much better, less work, more gore, and my Big Mac doesn't come with blood, tho my postal mail is awful damn slow, maybe I should do something about that.

Well... My monitor has trouble with weird resolutions like that. Then again, my monitor is old and sucky. Wish I could help ya fix it... If nothing works, you could always get Diablo II! Awesome game.

F1 I have your quick fix right here....

Grab your monitor, take it out side, smash it into the street, and buy a new one.

Seriously though, does the game let you play or do you just get the noise? Have you tried a re-install?

I have a possible fix, but it involves Ass/Remove.

I thought the point of the boy's choir was that they didn't have testes.

I would say fire off an email to your monitor manufacturorororor(the guys who made the thing that makes weird noise which makes you scared), i wouldn't be too stressed about diablo though, I'll give you run down of gameplay:

Diablo 1.
Step 1: Find bad guys
Step 2: click mouse 129431729381270938127039817240987 times or untill your doctor impounds your computer because you are falling behind on your bill for carpal tunnel treatment.
Step 3: Pick up .00000001 gold coins from corpse so you can eventually buy that 2 million gold coin "Golden Axe of Slightly Bruising"
Step 4: Repeat step 1-3 untill you have killed all 9879876x10^1971923817 bad guys in the level.
Step 5: Watch pre rendered cut scene for 4 seconds.
Step 6: Repeat 1-5 for the next 8 months of your life non stop or untill you have a level 4 necromancer, or the game ends, which ever comes first.

Diablo 2.
Take diablo 1, and multiply any numbers by five thousand.

Yeah, the game does let me play. The Vienna Boy Choir no longer 'alters' it's members (no pun intended). I'll try contacting the manufacturer of my monitor, I'll call them. Faster response. Thanks guys for your help. If anyone has any other wacky ideas, lemme know.

how about: forgetting the crappy noise and sounds all together. Turn off your speakers, and turn up your stereo?

well, F1, i hate to scare you, btu my monitor made a similar noise.
dont worry, the noise stopped - as soon as the monitor blew.
now, its a fully functional flashing light - the monitor power light clicks on, off, on, off....
