Here's a sample of xearth output

The colors are evil, but it's a Mercator projection and has the locations mapped as a bonus. Woo!

The taglist file used was:
39.1 -94.6 linear
42.4 -123.3 allewyn

These map extents are a little less than 80 degrees, which is bad. If we want to use this, we'd probably best trim it to 75 degree extents and I'll recalibrate the JavaScript. I did a little spreadsheet to assist with the coding.

And we'll change the colors, obviously.

Hmmm, linear, I like what you've done. The file is only 26K! I tried to look at the source but, unfortunately, it appears to be written in a lanuage my browser doesn't understand (gobbledy-gook for code). I know you just threww this up as an example but there are also 6 or more errors in the code. (netscape view-source strings flashing). Maybe that's language related? Anyway, if you have time, could you group the people in the NY USA area so we can see if they look crowded or overlap? I'm gonna DL the source and poke around...

Welcome to the map bms, you're the first Brazilian! *How you feelin after those TWO black pills hmmm? Ready to take on the world and redesign it? LOL!

Hey - this is awesome! Put me next door to Slime when you update it next! I love being able to see how we're all distributed around the big ball!

Allewyn, I posted a .gif and an Excel spreadsheet--I'm not sure you should be able to view source on either. You won't be able to view the spreadsheet without Excel installed, but with it and IE it open right in your browser.

Clusters of people will be the big problem and that's why I think that DHTML will be necessary. PLus I hate the text style of those markers--I just figured we'd use it to check our work as we drew our own markers on layers over a clean map or something. There's be a couple cool presentations possible, I think.

And I agree about the text. Maybe Buncha could be called on to do popups? hint hint

-> Here's the xearth gif sample <-
-> Here's my little spreadsheet <-

These were linked in one of my earlier posts. The extents of the sample map lie between 75 and 80 degrees latitude.

If you could send me the list you have as a spreadsheet, I can do a quick plot of where everyone is currently at. If that's too much work for ya, we can probably bang out a regular expression to convert into the format we want for the taglist.

Allewyn: Since South Bend is at the northern end of Indiana and I live on the southern end of Indiana, I suppose I better make a correction to your list.

By the way, anyone in the U.S.A. who wants to look up their location can find it at The U.S. Census Bureau

yes, and we prefer decimals to degrees, minutes, seconds. Two decimal places is precise enough.
