How do I tell what type of file an attachment is in Outlook Express?

I tried right clicking on the paper clip icon and selecting properties from the context menu, but that didn't tell me.

Any help is appreciated.

Just double-click the message with the attachment. When it pops up, you should be able to see it in the "attach:" box.
You can also click on the paper clip icon in the top right corner of the message, it should tell you the name and the extension of the attached file.

I would disable the preview window altogether, there's a lot of virii recently developed that expose an exploit in Outlook and OLExpress that allow them to execute when the *mail* is opened or previewd, not just the attachment. Or get thee to their website and patch up if you haven't already.

If you're not seeing file extensions all over your computer, for every file, go to Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / the View tab and *uncheck* "hide file extensions for known file types"
