Gotta love it. I love the Over Explaining Factor, and I really love the stuff at the end past the tutorial itself -- lots of stuff for the newbie to experiment with.

This actually brings up something that they changed in PS 6, something that I used to take advantage of in earlier versions. Let's say I have a layer filled with black, then I clip a layer above it. If I set the black layer to screen, then the clipped layer would "disappear". Since the black would be transparent, then nothing clipped above it would show. Something like that. Man, I really miss that "feature".

That was the smoothest tutorial I ever went over, and I learned a ton. Thanks Greg!! All I saw wrong was simple spelling errors. You explained everything so intensely, there was no way I would of hit a wall. Great work.

The function you are looking for is still there but now it's a feature

Do the same thing except double-click on the Group Base layer and click "Blend Clipped Layers as a Group" off. Should do the trick.

That's not working for me.

3) Image clipped to #2
2) Clouds, Threshold
1) Blue background

What's happening is that I see the whole image, #3, but it becomes a shade of blue depending on #2 blending mode. This is really weird.

What do you mean by "Clouds, Threshold".

WarJ shorthand for Filter > Render > Clouds, then Image > Adjust > Threshold. This way I had a bunch of black and white on one layer to fiddle with.

My monitor suddenly decided to start behaving again, so I'll give it another whirl. Maybe post some shots, but no promises. I'm also due for a format, so that might clear up a bunch of little problems that I've been having lately.

Greg - this is really outstanding. It's a huge investment in time to do a tutorial of this magnitude and level of attention to detail, especially with all the obvious care at creating a coherent visual style and organization to your site - all the special icons are great!

I am really looking forward to more! Let us know as they come online, okay?

The Threshold doesn't produce any transparency to clip the Group Member with. After the Threshold move, isolate the view to just that layer and hit Command-Option-~ (Mac) or Control-Alt-~ (PC) to select based on viewed density, then Delete the select to transparency.

Once your have some transparency on your Group Base it should work.

That's just it -- it used to work without transparent pixels. Turning "Blend Clipped Layers as a Group" off doesn't do it either. I guess I'll have to live with out this until I figure out what's up.

GVH... very impressive tute and especially your images on you site.
It's refreshing to see images with impact and meaning.
Your colour sense and painting technique is beautiful.

I happened to be waiting for a friend in Borders today and was over in the Geek section when I spied your name as a contributing author of Photoshop 6 Bible. Based strictly on that alone I'll be buying that book as soon as my budget permits.

I looked around hoping to find other stuff with your name on it but was unsuccessful. Do you have other titles out, either alone or as a contributor? If not, I strongly encourage you to do so. You have quite a knack for clear and engaging technical writing, not to mention videos. It could be a nice sideline. (Just be sure to get a good agent to negotiate the contract for you.)

No, I don't have a book. I had a contract but left it when the publisher downsized...

My work has been referenced in a number of books but Photoshop Studio Secrets and the PS Bible gold edition are the most current.

I have had a look at your tutorial, but as it is quite involved, I thought I had better print it, so that I can reference the instructions easily as I try and do the tutorial. However, when I tried to print it in portrait mode, quite a large chunk of the right hand side was chopped off. Having to print the tute in landscape mode will take quite a few pages too! Pity about that.

GVH: Thanks for links and the additional title to put on my list. I need to begin at the beginning. Still, you make me think I may actually be able to do some of this stuff!
