I'm looking to pick up a new computer this summer for school. I'd really thought I'd go with a lap top but I've used neither Power Book or iBook. The Power Book is beautiful, but is it worth all the money? Is the iBook anywhere near as powerful? What are your thoughts on these?

good question!

well, if i would have to choose, i'd go with powerbook because of the G4, the combodrive and the bigger display.

I think the 14-in I book is one of the best deals out there, and its got a combo drive. Its one main draw back - not a G4. If you have the money for the Powerbook- get it. If your going to use OSX you'll want it. Ive had alot of lag on my G3 computers while running OSX.

well they're both exquisite pieces of hardware so the big question is, "what are you going to be using this laptop for?"

if you're looking for a straight-up desktop replacement then you're going to have to spend major $$$ on the Ti; but if you're mostly interested in being able to work on the run from time to time then i'd go with the iBook.

i've messed around on both for a little bit of time and, while i think they're both great, the keyboard on the iBook seemed a little flimsy to me so make sure to check out both in person before dropping a wad of cash -- duh.

personally i plan on getting an iBook within the year (despite the fact i haven't owned an apple in about eight years) because i need a portable to show clients new designs on the spot and i'm away from my desktop a lot so it'll be nice to have something "smaller" to do work on that i can later finish up on the better system at home.

Exactly what I wanted to hear.

Yes, either laptop would be a replacement for the Sony Vaio I currently have. Currently I own 2 PCs and a Mac. The laptop would be a replacement for my desktop, so the Power Book would be the obvious choice with the G4 but for the $$$ I'd be spending, its only a matter of time before a G5 tower comes out, probably for the same price. I think the smart thing would be to bring up my 733Mhz G4 tower and wait for the G5 to come out, but the Power Book is just so cool. Choices oh choices.

Is anyone running Darwin here? I think I'd try dual booting with OS X and Darwin. Or maybe run both. Arrggghhh why couldn't the USSC just let Microsoft buy out all their competitors so I wouldn't have so many choices! I'd appreciate any more info on Darwin other then whats on the Apple site if someone has any

Thanks as always
