O.k., this is probably not the place for this, but heck, it's turned into a great afternoon for me and I thought I'd share... We've been riding the razor's edge for the past month and a half. I just checked the mail and the one of checks we were waiting on has arrived! Yaaay!! No more worrying about eviction.

Background info (skip if it bores you):

My wife had lost her job; gone several weeks without pay of any kind; and found a new job that paid a lot less. We'd depleted our resources so badly with that and prior difficulties that we were faced with only one alternative... Cash in her retirement money from her old job....

If any of you have ever tried this, it's not as simple as going to the bank and making a withdrawal. There's gobs of forms to fill out, many of them needing to be notorized, and long delays (30 to 90 days, depending). So if you're ever in a bind, don't count on it being a quick fix.

In our case though, we had a very understanding landlord who was willing to forgo rent payment for May and June until the 12th. This was the day we were expecting a direct deposit of two thirds of the money, and a mailing out on or before that date of a check for the other third. The deal was, though, if we couldn't pay on the 12th, we'd have 48 hours to pack up. Now, we had other money coming in from a couple of sources, but one of them got delayed, and the other was stupidly mailed out to our old address. Neither had arrived, and I was getting more and more frantic that everything would fall apart (Don't you just hate it when your life is taken out of your hands?).

Anyhow, as I'd said at the top of this meandering message, I just checked the mail and that check for one third of the retirement money came today! My wife's dropping a check off on the way home for the outstanding rent. Next week, when the rest of the money comes in, we're paying rent ahead a couple of months; catching up on bills; and paying most bills ahead four to five months. We'll be able to relax, de-stress, and get our lives back on track. If we can manage to sidestep any more problems, maybe we can finally get off this feast or famine rollercoaster and onto a less bumpy ride of life.

If you've read this far, thanks for reading!

wow, I'm glad things are going better for you. =)

Hmm, aren't there all sorts of laws to throw at the landlord so that he can't evict right away?

Laws? Yea, there are.. But they had us sign a paper stating that everything would be paid up by the 12th or we'd agree to a 48 hour eviction notice.. i.e., while they were helpful and understanding about everything by not immediately proceeding with eviction procedures last month when we couldn't pay, they covered their respective asses by having us sign that paper. I'm sure if we'd refused to sign, they would have kindly demanded we pay up immediately or they'd be forced to begin eviction procedures.

I don't begrudge their having us sign the paper. They were being more than reasonable and understanding. They are running a business after all. Sure, I likely would have fought tooth and nail against us leaving if there'd been some legitimate snafu/delay in our getting the money. But I won't begrudge them trying to run a business.

Well, I'm glad to hear things are looking up for you. I know how it is to be in a tight spot.

And why wouldn't this be the place for this sort of thing? It's the Asylum!

Heh.. all this razor talk.. A phrase popped into my head... Achmed's Razor... I have no idea where it came from, but it feels familiar for some reason. A quicky web search was less than satisfying. Anyone else know this phrase?

P.S. - I'm not a big AC/DC fan, but my wife is. I'm more Aerosmith, Queen, rock opera style myself.

I think you'll have better luck with "Occam's Razor," a concept that, when broken down to the very basics, says the simplest answer is usually the correct one.

Hehe... Achmed's...
