Who would be me.

I just lost a whole year of work, due to the fact that I lost everything on my HD... now all I have left is what I've put on my site.

I'm taking this opportunity to tell everyone: Make backups regularly. Do it every month or so, it takes little time and you will be very glad you did it in case things go wrong.

Oh, and you don't need to post 'Aww man that sucks' posts... Just wanted you guys & girls not to make the same mistake as I did.

To recycle an old proverb I once heard:

Real men don't do backups.
They just cry..

Sorry to hear that Mahjqa. Been there earlier myself.

Well, I will say thanks for the reminder. It would suck heinously if that happened to me right now. Off to do a backup...

Whoaha! That's...heavy, man. All that stuff....gone??!!?? Ouch!

On the other hand, now you have 'room' for improvement...get to work!

*considers backing up hard drive...* 'Wouldn't want to do a Mahjqa now, would I...'

Thanks for relaying the hard-earned xp, Mahjqa.

Aw man that *really sucks*

lesson 2: when you backup, keep the backups offsite. if your
house is burned down you save your backups. not to mention
thieves will often take all the cds or tapes around too.

p.s. what do you mean you lost everything on your HD?
unless you put the drive in a microwave there's ususally
a chance you can recover at least some of the data.

did it crash?
did you reformat?

Yea you could possibly have the information taken off a HD but thats expensive.

I live by the zip drive. I think its one of the greatest inventions ever made. Whenever I work on something school or work related I save it on my HD and then on the zip. I usually end up putting it on a floppy too. I'm anal about how many times I save things. What you just said happened to me way to many times as a kid.

Ouch! I been there....

It's that sinking feeling in your stomach when you sit in front of you PC and it dawns on you. It will never come back.

I got up from my puter. Went for a walk in the park. Picked up a double shot latte, a new HDD and a nikko pen on the way home. Before I put the new HDD in I grabbed the nikko and scrawled on it "Clean slate".

Clean slate. I had a clean slate. I could take the knowledge and skill I'd accumulated over the past couple of years and start making something of it. Make something new. Something different and something better.

To be honest, the only thing I really missed was my collection of links, an almost finished DHTML scroll window - complete with scroll bar, and a couple of paintings that I hadn?t finished yet. Still, I'd been there before; I could do it again. But this time I'd do it better.

I?m also a firm believe that you only get better, so where?s the point in crying over your crap stuff when you could be spending your time making the truly great stuff instead.

Yick! That reminds me that very high on my "soon to get" list is a cd burner. Right now, my only option is floppy backup. Which sucks rocks.

Well... Our OS became quite unstable, and my dad thought it was the right thing to format the whole drive the OS was on, (C and reinstall. Now everyone who uses the comp has their stuff on the D: drive... except for me. He didn't know, or forgot. Either way, I don't think I can get my stuff back...

Webshaman; Indeed. I may've lost my work, but everything I learned from it is still there. Everyone else; thanks.

Had almost the same happen to me a couple of months ago. After that I have been burning all of my important files to a cd at least once a month, and I upload most of my webwork to a server as soon as it is done so I have a backup there as well...

I've been in serious need of archiving for some time now. First, I couldn't find CDs that my old burner can handle. Once I found some, the old burner up and died. Not only won't it read CDs, or even rocognize a CD as such, it heats them up *very* hot to the touch after 30 seconds or so. Then I have to fight with it to get the CD out.

I'll be ordering a new one tomorrow. Once I get it running, I'll be burning around 4 CDs worth of junk. Maybe I'll even format my drive.

Mahjqa, that more than sucks.

It's good you posted this though because it simply can't be repeated enough about how important it is to back up your stuff. In fact, you've inspired me to do some backups because I've gotten lazy lately about it.

About a year ago I decided to back up my hard drive due to the circulation of Love(x) viruses. I backed it up as a ghost and stuck it right in the middle of my C drive. Wow...I'm stupid. So I got hacked the next month but thought that I was fine due to the fact that I had a backup. Now I back everything up to a DVD-R. Yes...backup everything offsite, thats a good suggestion

But...sorry to hear that you got hacked (or whatever happened)
