Ok i am gonna build a w/s purely for graphics/3d any input which cpu to go for? Intels P4 Or the uprated p3 tualatin, ok sorry that post was brief had phone call..

I cant afford to go for dual processor at the moment , now the P4 would have the advantage of a faster bus speed etc, and the range i can afford is at the lower end of the p4 scale, however most software at the moment doesnt support most of the cool features in the p4 and as i am not planning on upgrading my software sometime soon what i am wondering is do i go for the faster end of the p3 range saving some money on the cpu and investing it elsewhere in the system, or go for the p4 and not go for such a powerful video card etc. the differnce in cpu speed would be about 400mhz but the difference in price would be a lot. yes i know we have a 3d forum but i though i would get more input here than posting there and like i said it was a quick original poost and i left off the graphics part.

Based on the fact the you aren't going to upgrade software and on the fact that some tualatin are on par with P4's, go with the P3 tualatin.

I have the trial model of the Celeron tualatin, it rates the same as the P4 of the same clock speed. Cool technology.

Video Card plays a HUGE deal in 3D software so invest your savings in a good card. The Matrox Parhelia is coming June 30th. If you don't know what it's about look it up, it's going to be the new standard for video cards.

EG nod i was prolly looking at the p3 1200 tualatin rather than the celeron version as i prefer that cache on the full blown cpu. Nod matrox have had some good cards in the past and to some extents have been overtaken by others, i was looking at one of the professional cards as i am starting to do more and more intensive 3d stuff, although i dont do mutch modelling i am in the composition and animation side of things so i need a fairly good system to render draught stuff. i got max set up for network rendering here in the office. what i want is a nice pc at home that i can proof stuff on aswell as be good in the 2d stuff such as design for print etc. (i can hear all the mac types calling me all sorts of names now).

thx again

tom

if only i could afford this....
