I just installed a new hard drive on my machine. This problem was also on my other hard drive which is really strange.

Whenever I boot into windows, it wants to know what mode I want to boot in.
*Normal
*Logged
*Safe mode
etc. . .

If I just hit enter for Normal mode, it boots fine, it is just annoying.

Can anyone tell me what the problem might be? I have searched through the MS Knowledge base to no avail.

Thanks in advance.

If you're using Windows 95/98 you could check if the file C:\msdos.sys contains the line

BootMenu=1

and if it does, change the 1 to 0 or remove that line completely.

Here's Microsoft's information on msdos.sys:

If you are running 98, 98Se or ME then click start, click run, type in msconfig and click ok. There should be an "advanced" button on the first page of the snap in, click that and un-check the boot menu option.

Thanks, I will try each one and see if that does the trick. Thanks again!

kackus: You can remove the line completly ? I thought the files size had to be the same always, and thats why its padded with XXXXXXXs and you can only change 1s to 0s because of this , or is that IO.sys or something ?

CPromt: MSConfig does exactly what I proposed, it's only that you didn't have to edit the file manually. I just forgot that this tool existed

Hugh: Yes, you can remove the line, the standard value is 0. It doesn't matter how many lines you have in the file, but it has to be bigger than 1024 bytes for some compatibility reasons. Please don't ask me what those reasons are...
