So I was at this July 4th party that my mom had dragged me to (it was a bunch of her friends, and nobody my age - I'm 19). In the end I'm glad she did, but that's not my point here I've been 100% *unemployed* this entire summer. My credit card is just about maxed out (limit is about $500, so that's not *too* much of a problem), and my checking account is running uncomfortably low. It was getting to the point where if I didn't make SOME kind of money soon, I was going to have to take out a loan to buy my books

So yeah - I was running out of money, and fast. And not a single place around me is hiring (I'm at home right now in St. Clair Shores, I'll be going back to Ann Arbor in September). And the places that were hiring, unfortunately *weren't* hiring me, because I could only work for the summer. I even applied at McDonalds - they rejected me. To be 100% honest, I'm glad they did

SO! This guy came up to me at this party, and asked what I was doing over the summer. I replied, "Absolutely nothing right now," and explained to him how I've been looking for a job, and how my Calc2 class was canceled due to lack of enrollment. So he asked me, "You're looking for a job, right? Well, I have a few internship positions open. Write up a quick resumé and send it to me, and we'll take it from there." So I said, "Sure - where are you located?"

Him --> "DaimlerChrysler HQ, Auburn Hills." Me -->

So I sent him my resumé, complete with education and interests and all that. <sidenote> I have a lot of interests, basically *everything* under the sun.. and I was trying to think of a quote that would fit that... And the first thing that popped into my mind was Heinlein's quote in Doc's sig. They loved it Thanks Doc!! </sidenote> They hooked me up with an interview today. They were describing what I would be doing (programming in java), and introduced me to what would be my Co-workers. Everything went a lot better than I sure expected.

They want me to start this Thursday

Congrats man! I am still looking for a job . But when I look at it in an intelligent perspective I see that locally the best place to work, for the money, the hours, and the labor, would definately be Rally's. So... *sigh* *sigh* I am fucked .

Gratzie Raptor! So... Is it still going to be just a summer job, or do you think this may work into a full time / permanent thing with school going to the back burner?

reitveld - "Specialization is for insects."
InSiDeR - lol.. better Rally's than nothing, right?
Witherin - At the moment, it's only a summer job. This next year is only my second at U-M so I'm going to go with education first, and they're alright with that. They *might* even let me work part-time from my dorm, which would be perfect

Congrats, Raptor! Connections always help--boy do I know about that. Then again, it also helps to be one of the few who can do what you do, which is where I stand. There aren't all that many English-speaking Korean translators here, and there are even fewer who specialize in classical Korean literature and culture. I've gotten some pretty "up there" jobs (official government jobs, like translating all of the new tourist info signs for various historical monuments, etc. around Seoul in time for the World Cup), and I'm still trying to figure out if it's because I'm very well connected, or because I'm good at what I do. Obviously, I would like to think it's the latter, but I know how important connections are here. I guess it's pretty much the same everywhere, huh?

Raptor, I'm glad that the job search worked out for you.

It looks like you also learned a lesson that I picked up after a couple of weeks of job searching one summer. When they ask you how long you plan on working there, lie.

Tell them that you plan on working there for a long time.

It's the only way to get a summer job... unless you fall ass-backwards into one like you did.

Raptor: Yea, I guess. But I have to say "Have a RALLY great day" to customers. Thats not a plus.

Thumper - Yep! That's the HQ, right off exit #78

WS, Suho, et all - Yeah, but it really seems to me that it's not *just* what you know, or *just* who you know.. it's like a combination of both. I have a continually strengthening background in C++, which put me in a good position for this job. And Ray (the guy that came up to me) knows my mom. So it was kind of both. Apparently he's been looking to hire me for a while.. But as far as *who* you know goes, I've heard I'm pretty lucky to know Ray. Apparently he's worked all over the states on projects (sidenote - none of the projects he's worked on has failed), including places like NASA. So I guess I'm in a *REALLY* good place right now

InSiDeR - It may be degrading, but stick with it and do it with enthusiasm, even if it *is* faked. If you prove to be a good worker there, your employer will (should ) put in a good word for you when you move on to better things My last employer was a gas station. My days were spent doing tire repairs, filling propane and kerosene, and a host of other menial tasks. Not the greatest job, but I stuck with it for 2 years, and did my job well. My employer there is always willing to put in a good word for me if I ask him to
