Preserved Topic: Anyone Use VNC?

The upgrade is progressing and when I'm done, I will have a computer left over that I will dedicate solely to backups. However, I will be keeping it in another room.

In order to access the computer for maintenance purposes, I was interested in using something like PC Anywhere, but didn't want to pay for it because I don't plan to use it that much. Besides, I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a way to access the backup computer's interface over a network.

Windows XP has something built in, but I'm using Windows 2000.

I heard about VNC in TechTV, which is from what I've seen, an open-source deal that has many emulations. My question here is: In your opinion, which one should I use and why?

VNC has always worked for me and my buds no prob.

look up VNC, and download the one that is simply called VNC. make sure you get a server side program and a client side program otherwise they won't do shit. Oh, and don't forget to get the client side to run as a service, not a program.

Machine #1: Win 98SE
Machine #2: Win 2000
Machine #3: Linux (I think...)

Client and server installed on all three. No probs at all linking any of them.

that's great open source software right there, works with anything from what I'm hearing here. I control a teleconferencing camera/codec with it at work with some kind of custom hybrid unix os. Been meaning to play around with it more on more platforms, thanks there wj

WJ: When talking about emulation I think Wes meant which of the open source re-writes offers the best features and what-not, not how do you run it.

VNC is not emulation.

it's remote access to a machine. and the clients run on virtually all platforms. You do need to set up and configure the server application on the machine you want access to. then you need the client on any of the machines you want to use to access the server machine with.

Att work we use the standard ATT labs distro though the tightvnc one that max linked to looks like the same thing with some enhanced security features

Generally this is used to administer windows boxes since there's nothing you can't do easlily through a telnet or ssh window to a linux box (you can also use X if you want a gui)

funny how many ways people are interpretting the word emulation. Looks like some cool stuff, I'll have to check it out.

I meant which version, which spin-off, which modification. For example, TightVNC, ChromiVNC, TridiaVNC, or any of the many others I came across in my search to find out more about VNC. Which do you recommend (for Windows 2000)?

I'm new to it, so I'm looking for suggestions. Don't wanna waste my time screwing with some crappy rewrite from a lousy programmer.

well, I've been using the 'straight'
vnc from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/download.html , and over a 10 mbit lan it has always been fast enough for me...

Windows 2000 also has it built in, it's called Terminal Services

yes, im using the "straight" vnc too every day! workin fine for me! the coolness is, that you have clients for every OS and also you can access the thing via webbrowser using a java applet.

Yeah, the regular VNC works great... I have systems in Aussie that I connect to and work on from my home...
I don't like the Java app though, maybe it's just me... but shoot for the norm distro, as I know it's great...

The computer you are connecting to has to be a server, the computer connection from can be XP or 2K pro.

Right. I don't have Win2k Server to run on the target machine.
