Nosing through the latest Fortean Times and I came across some links to some proper Mad Scientist stuff that you can try at home:

Anti Grav:

Ball Lightning:

JLN Labs is a bit of a nutty place but they have some interesting things to play with

Although most things look fairly safe generating a stable plasmoid inside your microwave sounds distinctly risky to me (as the green text on a black background might demonstrate) so I wouldn't recommend you try that unless you know exactly what you are doing or are very stupid (or both).

Right then I'm off to convert my car to run on water.

JNL Labs -- One of these days I'm going to build my own Hamel spinner. I've got most of the magnets, but the disks are proving difficult.

Hmm... apparently my links to "Joe's Cell" are gone. Another way to run your car on water, but it's fringe science. This method is based on "orgone" energy.

I've got a few other experiments in the works involving "primary energy". Rather easy to do with bucking magnets and a soleniod or two. Looks like these links are down as well. I found a related experment about getting free voltage from radient energy with two magnets, a coil, and an antenae.

I did find one page with evil experiments. Like charging a water cannon/pistol ala Tesla coil. Theoretically you can shoot the charge along the water stream. Another experiment involved giving a bunch of children mirrors and teaching them to reflect sunlight onto the same spot. Flame on!

I've also got a few formulas for turning silver into gold. Too bad I don't have any silver or 4 car batteries. :sigh:

Here's a good one: Multiple Mentality.

Woohooo, now we're talking
As for the Tesla Coil that WJ mentioned, I built one my senior year in high school for a physics project. However, I highly recommend NOT building one of these unless you do a great deal of research and take several safety precautions. I'll admit that even after I did all that, I still got "bit" by my transformer (28,000 V / 30mA) twice, and let me just say that it's not a particularly enjoyable experience. I also was "zapped" by the primary coil of the Tesla Coil about 3 times (2 of them weren't too bad because I was trying to get hit by it then {long story}, but the 3rd time was my stupidity in forgetting to power down the transformer all the way and discharge the capacitor bank).
For anyone interested, my Tesla Coil had a 4" secondary, and was powered by the 28kV transformer. Under ideal conditions, it could produce lightning arcs up to about 4 feet long, around 150,000 Volts.

That Multiple Mentality one is kinda cool. I dunno how accurate that actually is..will it really make your mind better? Hehe. But it would be kinda fun to do some of that when you're absolutely bored and have nothing else to occupy your time.
