That's been around for a while. Microsoft has it implemented in WindowsXP - it's called Cleartype.

Woah.

At first I thought it was BS, and that the difference wouldn't be noticeable. And in fact, this was the case when I saw the diamond pictures; the sub-pixel anti-aliasing made them look like aliased diamonds that were merely colored strangely.

But the "Spectacular Sub-Pixel Rendered Text" image at the bottom really does look incredibly smooth on my laptop's LCD screen. The colors around the edges are slightly visible, but the effect certainly looks worth it. I wish I could see it next to the same piece of text using traditional anti-aliasing, however.

And, of course, this is fairly useless, since a large portion of computer users don't have LCD screens.

...but still, it would sure make a nifty Photoshop are 3d Studio Max plugin...
