I asked a while ago if anyone had been in the military and what they did. I had decided to go for the Air Force which everyone suggested even my family had suggested. So I tried and I had a an issue with a law violation that essentially disqualified me from getting into the Air Force all together....the Navy was on my heels though and they wanted me for themselves...but I didnt give up I got all my info got the Air Force and did what the recruiter wanted and I had an interview with his boss and then his commander.....and after waiting for what feels like forever..I talked to the recruiter and he said that I am all clear and that I am set to join offically and my offense has been waived and I am going to get my psyical and join offically this thursday.

To some this may not be very cool but I am very excited for this and I cannot wait. It's going to be a good thing for me to get myself off my lazy arse and get moving and get more education and travel and lots of things.

I gave serious consideration to going into the National Guard but most of my family tried to talk me out of it and then I finally came to the conclusion that it just wasn't for me. Congratulations though Indus, getting into the Air Force is awesome. I've seen Top Gun a million times so I assume its mostly beautiful girls, beach volleyball, and doing stupid stunts in the air. Of course I could be wrong on that one.

Aren't you almost done your 4 years Michael?? Are you going to get out for good or stay in for more abuse?
I was told that it might not be until April or May....but that can always change.

Yea... 4 year mark is comin'.
I've tossed and turned over re-enlistment for months now.
I've gotten the inputs of all the people that are pretty close to me...... and I made my decision just last week, as a matter of fact.
(although the word hasn't been spread around, even in real life)....
I'm in the process of putting together my application for a special duty assignment to become an instructor at basic training.
That's another 4 year contract.

Wow...thats great....wouldnt that be some funny sh*t if you were my instructor...hahaha

I just can tell this feels right to do at this point in my life. I just hope that I can get a decent job that I will be happy with....I know that because of my offense I can't get a job with any security clearance like what you do is definitly out of the question..but I hope there is something good left for me. I 23 and going in not the youngest age but I am not old at all. If I leave by the time I was told I might go I will be 24 by then.

Oh yeah by the way....how old are you Michael?

Chances would be very slim that I would be your instuctor. You'd have to have your enlistment delayed by many many months for that to happen.
I won't leave my present assignment until around June of next year...... then I'd go back to tech school to learn to be an instructor..... which is about 12 or 14 weeks long.

And I'd guess that you'd be able to get into my present career field. (munitions systems) ... you may find at the end of the path, that they're not quite as selective about people who join certain career fields, as you may think.
Added security clearences for my job revolve around where your stationed, more than anything.

And, I'll be 23 very shortly.

Trust me on that one- it's one of those `I wish I would've known' things.... talk to Jeni... I'm sure she could hook you up with some Dr. Scholls.......hehehehehe.....

btw, 'Top Gun' was Navy... Fighters that take off from carriers, except on rare occations, are Navy and not Air Force...

If you say that they are not to picky about it.....I hope that stays true....I would like to get a good computer or electronics job maybe. I would like to travel too and from what I saw you were stationed out of the US...which I wouldnt mind so much.

mm... actually I went to college for about 2 years before I joined at 19.
I've definately had my opportunities at travelling.... japan, korea, thailand, germany, belgium, france... just to name a few.

beautiful girls, beach volleyball..... I must have missed that part. All I ever saw were lots of ugly guys and plenty of mud. I arrived on Paris Island in the fall of '82(that means I'm an old guy now)and embarked on that ever so pleasant journey known as USMC bootcamp. Survived that and wandered over to Quantico VA, for my MOS training for 11 months(4063-Cobol Programmer). Then I headed off to my reserve unit in Atlanta, where I never saw a computer again(there was rumored to be one in Albany).

All in all, I'm happy to have served. If nothing else, it taught me that I am not the center of the universe(though not far from it!).

I'm pretty sure the Air Force was a wise choice.

Speaking of security clearance...
I went in this summer to speak with the Navy because I had nothing else to do and the recruiter happened to call at the right time. Well after lots of talk they eventually had me take a practice ASVAB and I scored a 95. This made them really excited and started talking about me going to work as a nuclear tech and starting as an E3 and all the good stuff.

Going Nuclear actually requires a 6 year commitment which didnt look to great to me, but I was actually considering it. Now I am back in highschool and have once again come to my senses and decided that maybe I will go in and take the real ASVAB just incase I have no other options after highschool.

What really freaked me out about it all was the amount of security clearance they were talking about that the nuclear techs had... I mean I cant even remember to go to school everyday, how the hell could I ever be responsible to power a freaking carrier or submarine?

Adam thats awesome that you scored that on a prctice test.....I didn't score that high, my math is way out of whack and it cost me big. Also I am trying to find a job that if I do and when I come back to regular life after service that I will be able to use. Now nuclear tech....I am just not sure how many places are hiring for people to do nuclear work besides power plants....although it is great experience to and there is nothing wrong with getting that kind of job in the military....I am just trying to find something that relates to what I would like and that would work for me lif I ever left.....and good luck if you ever decide to go in let us know what you decide to do.

Congratulations Indus! Glad to hear you are happy about it. Only thing that makes me nervous is that apparently you haven't actually picked out your job yet. Like folks said in the previous thread "get it in writing!!!!" You are right to want a job that will translate well into the civilian world, but never, ever, never let the service pick your job for you. Picking your job absolutely must be your top priority right now! No matter how much you might trust your recruiter, don't let the guy sweet talk you into something you don't want.

Well I am going down on thursday to pick my job a get a psyical and I am going to make a mental list of the jobs that I would like and out of those I am going to pick one and make sure that I get it......I am definitly going to keep my eyes open thursday. Just gotta make sure that I get lots of sleep.

Sleep! Yes, get plenty of that. You want to be alert for all that will be going on. And the day you get your physical will be a long one. Take a book; there is lots of standing in line.

Some idiots have a tendency to stay up late and kinda party. Never understood that.

I'm not much of a party person at all.....I rarely drink and I just have a few to relax. I don't mind being alone and I enjoy the simple things. I don't think that I will have much trouble during my physical.....although the waiting part is not something that I look forward to. I'm not sure if they will let me read while I am there but I will figure out some way to keep myself occupied.

and how could we forget the glorious experience of bending over and spreading your ass cheeks...

Well it's offical now I am in the Air Force.....the physical wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. There was only 6 of us so we just flew right through the whole thing. I just have to wait for a job to be assigned to me now. Whew.....at least that part is over for now. More to come in the near future though.
