A short little tut to Tiki's sheet:
To use the sheet unzip it to somewhere. Then open openRPG and right click in the top-left area (where your game tree is) and click on the 'Insert File' option and browse to where you unzipped the file. You have now 'installed' the character sheet. Hurray
And now some info about the various parts of the sheet.
the Character tab:
Pretty straight forward. Just insert whatever info you have at the appropriate place and this one is finnished.
the Combat/Saves tab:
This one is a little bit more complicated. The "Current HP" field just holds your current hp, nice to have so you know how close you are to death in the heath of the battle. The next field is the Initiative field. Here you enter [1d20 + your initiative modifier]. When you press the Send button rigth of this field the sheet performs the roll and then sends the result to the chat with a little text in front, in this case Initiative::. After this comes the Attacks sections. Here you change the weapons and stats allready there for your own weapons. To change these options you have to open (click on the pluss sign) the character sheet and the Combat/Saves sheet in OpenRPG. You then have to right click on Attacks and chose 'design'. You are now presented with a new window where you can edit, add, remove things in the Attack options. The info for the attack rolls is written like they are for a speical reason. The only problem is that I can't figure out what it is. I think it was something like this: [1d20 + base attack bonus + strength bonus + other modifiers], but I'm not sure about that. For the Special Attacks section you do the same. After that follows 4 sections where you just enter your info with any special tricks. The 'Saving Throws' sections is edited in the same manner as you edited the Attacks and Special Attacks.
the Ammunition tracker tab:
Simply keeps track of what kinds of amunition you have and how much you have of it.
the Skill/Feats/Ablilities tab:
Change the stats allready there what your charater has. The sections with a send button has to be editted through the design menu. In the skills section is might not be a bad idea to also add skill rolls for those skills that you can use without ranks as well, for example spot.
the Spells/Spell-like Abilities tab:
The first section is what spells you have on the various levels. Here you might want do but at least the name of the spell pluss a dice roller calculating how much damage it does. It might also not be a bad idea to put some more info about the spell there like area of effect, duration etc depending on the spell. I have no idea what the next section is for, so we'll have to wait for Tiki to explain that one. The Spell-like ability section is pretty similair to the spell section. After that follows a couple of field where you just fill in whatever information is apropriate (sp?)
the Psionics tab:
I'll skip this one since no one is playing a psionic.
the Gold/Equip tab:
The top thingy is to hold info about how much money you have and the bottom part is a table to hold info about what you own except for the gold.
Hope that helps. The manual explains the dice rollers pretty good so I didn't metion anything about them here. But if something is unclear on the subject I'll gladly write another little tut as well.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'll probably get to that tomorrow night.
I've been thinking--as it gets closer to game time, it has occured to me that it might be a good idea for us to have a better way to communicate in order to set things up. The only instant messaging system I use is MSN... does anyone else use MSN? If not, and everyone uses ICQ, I might just install that, since everyone here (at the Asylum) seems to use ICQ...

I'm going to be gone for most of the rest of the day (maybe nine hours?), but when I get back I think I'll try to set up ICQ....
[Edit: I just realized that it's possible that Skaarjj uses ICQ as well, since he didn't specifically say he didn't... so I think I'm going to go with ICQ. A lot of people here seem to use it anyway...]

Hoo boy. Well, how should I begin...
I know you guys are probably going to be pretty pissed at me for this, and you'll have good reason. I especially feel bad for those of you who had to stay up most of the night waiting for this...
I will not be able to make it today, for reasons not directly connected to our gaming session itself, but reasons which deal with a much larger issue of which the gaming session is a small part. This may not make too much sense, but I don't really want to go into too much detail right now. I'm not sure if this means that I won't be able to participate at all--that's something I'm going to have to figure out. I will keep you guys updated. And I'm very, very sorry to have to do this to you at the last minute.
If you want to get together without me, please feel free. It would probably make me feel better if I knew I didn't ruin it for everybody.
I'll probably be speaking to each of you individually in the near future. Sorry.

I vow that I will find time for this, but I'm not sure. My only free time is on Saturdays and Sundays, and every second friday night (starting rom this friday night and incrementing a fortnight after that).

OK, this is something that has been bugging me for a while, and I wanted to hear what you guys think. Most of the D&D attributes would be very hard to measure in real world terms (i.e., it would be very difficult to give a number to a person for most attributes). I suppose intelligence could somehow be tied to IQ, but that isn't mentioned in the PHB.
The one attribute that does come with solid figures attached is strength. The solid figures I refer to are the carrying capacity figures on p. 192 (in the .pdf file). It says that a character should be able to lift over their head the maximum load for their strength rating. What exactly does "lift overhead" mean, though? Are we talking a clean and jerk or snatch, as in weightlifting? Or is it a straight press? I'm kind of leaning more toward the straight press, since current records for the clean and jerk or snatch would put the guy's strength at around 21 or 22.
At any rate, Telana should be able to press (I'm assuming press, seated) 60 kilograms, which is a significant amount. It seems like quite a bit, actually--even a 10 strength (low-end average) should be able to press 45 kilograms, which isn't as easy as it sounds (I haven't actually tried it, but I think I could do it--I'll have to try it tomorrow at the club).
Yes, it is absurd to measure strength with a single figure that measures pressing ability. I guess I'm really trying to say that I think the carrying capacity figures are too high. A light load for Telana would be a 20k pack, and she's supposed to be able to run around with this all day without getting tired. Right.
So what's the point? No point, really. I'm actually feeling kind of sick today, and I just needed something to go off on. That's all.

As far as I know, it's based on straight press figures. I take it you've never wore heavy armor (i.e. chainmail), or done any fighting with actual weapons from the middle ages. Chainmail weighs alot (and that weight is mostly on the shoulders...). Also, the weapons weigh alot...
I also take it you were never in the military...well, as I was in the Army, we used to run long distances, and march even longer ones with 20+ kg on ones body...so, after 'getting used' to such a load, your body adapts...and one tends not to notice it much.
Actually, there are many 'problems' with the D&D system...that with the scores notwithstanding (how does one measure Dex, or Wis?), the thing the most bothers me is Armor. Armor does not make one harder to hit...it subtracts from damage. One realizes this, when one has actually wore armor and used it in fights. To the point (and they did do some 'corrections' in the 3rd edition rules...), wearing armor actually makes it easier to be hit...one can't easily dodge in armor...and it makes it harder to hit someone else...armor is somewhat cumbersome. Armor was developed to prevent (or lessen) damage. Therefore, weapons were developed to penetrate that armor...and so the cycle (until firearms where developed to the point that they were reliable). The cycle still continues...
Now, with the introduction of magic...we get some strangeness. Armor can be 'magically' handled...and so can weapons. So here, we have a different sort of cycle. However, it is rare to actually find armor that resists actual magic itself. That, in itself, is interesting...and another problem in the D&D world...this cycle is not very well represented, IMHO.
With the introduction of magic, range warefare is entirely changed. It must be said, that range warefare is the best form of attack (which the D&D system largely ignores...). This is because most opponents in the D&D world do not have long-range attack possibilities...and must close to close combat range to deal damage. A party that can take advantage of this, should win. But the rules for bows (and magic) mostly prohibit this...which is ridiculous. The rules allow opponents to close much to quickly in comparison to the ability to attack. Anyone who has played Balder's Gate, will know what I am talking about...Bows (and magic) rule!!!
However, the close combat (sometimes necessary, esp. when in dungeons) isn't that bad...but. I just don't like the combat system that much...there are better ones. *shrugs* But it is the role-play that I like most...so...one takes these things as they are.

quote: I take it you've never wore heavy armor (i.e. chainmail), or done any fighting with actual weapons from the middle ages.

On the armor, etc.: I know how heavy chainmail and some of those weapons can be, but how does this relate to my gripe? Medieval soldiers did not walk around all day with their armor on, carrying every single weapon they owned.
On military training: Training is the key word here, and this points up even further the absurdity of trying to measure strength with a single number. Actually, running around with a 20 kg pack is not a test of strength so much as it is a test of endurance. I think it's safe to say that the D&D system is nowhere near realistic (it was never meant to be that realistic). The thing that got me thinking about it was how we used to sit around and try to judge what our attribute scores would be if we were D&D characters. Silly, yeah, but fun.
Good point about armor, of course--it really should take away from the damage done. As far as armor being cumbersome, D&D does reflect that to an extent, limiting your dexterity bonus (to dodge) depending on the type of armor. Magic also gets kind of wacky, primarily because magic (well, not that sort of magic) never existed, unlike most of the armor and weapons involved.
Yeah, the combat system has flaws, but it is the roleplaying we're here for. I just felt like complaining about some stuff that us gamers always complain about but don't really care about that much.
Er, at the risk of reverting to my old geekdom (hrm, perhaps it's a bit late for such concerns), if you did have to assign yourself attribute scores, what would you give yourself? Yes, it's silly, but I'm in a silly mood. Actually, I feel like I'm on the brink of death by sneezing, and I need something to distract myself from the torture. I'll have to think about my stats...

Hmmm...very interesting. Yes, the scores are not really...realistic. I agree. But for the sake of simplisity, that's what we have...I suppose one could make a bunch of 'composite' scores...(re - endurance, the comb. of Str and Con), for example.
But yeah, I see where you are coming from...
My scores? Hmmm...
Str - 14 (I think...)
Int - 15 (May be higher...hard to say...)
Wis - 16 (Well, who knows?)
Dex - 13 (Though I have dexterity...I'm definitly not that dextrous...)
Con - 14 (Con is always a tough one...it may be much higher...)
Chr - 15 (Yep. Here comes Ray...hehe...)
Not bad...*shrugs*
Hope you get well...

I'm glad your character's no he man Suho, consider your a she in this game, if she was a he-man...*shudder* :P
anyway, indemar's stats:
15 +2 <--- Charisma
13 +1 <--- Strength
12 +1 <--- Dexterity
12 +1 <--- Contsitution
12 +1 <--- Intelligence
11 +0 <--- Wisdom
Somethings are around average, but I don't mind too much.

cool, but at least it reminded me to make indemar's stats.
Mine would be:
STR> 16 (what can I say? I'm a strong person)
DEX> 12 (but I can't move that fast)
WIS> 16 (I could easily be a psychologist)
INT> 17 (I have a majorly high IQ)
CON> 14 (but, like Suho's, probably alot lower at the moment due to illness)
CHA> 13 (I'm kinda of average, but if I have to, I can bullshit like no one's business, though I don't make a habit of it)
That more what you were looking for?

I may have a problem...my computer did something strange this morning (I'm typing this from work). At the moment, Scan Disk is running on my computer at home (and it's going through my big hard drive...yikes! And taking a long time...hours...may be that the hard drive crashed *crosses fingers*).
If I'm not there tomorrow, then you know why...and I'll be a sobbing wreck...

WS- Don't you mean 0500 GMT? I think that would be 0600 for you...
Anyway, my schedule tomorrow is a little more free than it normally will be, so we don't have to start so early if you don't want to. All I know is that I've been struggling with my character sheet a bit, and it's still not finished. I'll probably be working on it from about 0400 GMT, and maybe if someone is on ICQ then (tiki?) they can help me out... we could start at 0500, 0600, or probably even get away with 0700 tomorrow.
At any rate, everyone just get on ICQ when you're ready. We can start when the whole gang is together.
Inition: It might be a tad difficult for you to join this campaign right away, although I personally would welcome another player. You'll have to speak to our DM (Veneficuz) first, and it will be up to him whether or not he can work you in a little later on. I would recommend sending him an e-mail.
OK, guys, see you tomorrow.

I think the time we 'agreed' upon was 0500 GMT, but I wouldn't mind pushing it back an hour if it is possible this one time.

Yes, I can swing 0600 for today. I've got to hit the library and then the gym, but I should be in after that (maybe around 0300).
WS- Actually, I was the one who first said we needed both a cleric and a rogue, and I decided to play a cleric because V said that role would be more vital. In lieu of a rogue, the best way to find traps is to have your biggest, beefiest party member stroll through them... logical, no?
Inition - Hey, well, if it's OK with V than it's OK with me. You'd better start putting your character together quick.
I'm getting the sinking feeling that this is going to be very difficult if we're missing a party member each week (I, for example, will be gone all next weekend). I'm not sure how that's going to work out...
Oh, while we're at it: Skaarjj, baby, I'm beginning to get the feeling that you don't love me anymore! Come on, toss some authorization over this way, will ya?

Anaikeos, Human Psion
Post writing note: I don't expect people to read this whole background, I'll have to write more later and fill in the -several- holes I left in the story, hope you like it. For alignment, I won't play an Evil character for obvious reasons, I'm looking at CN (which is kind of cheesy) or true neutral. If I play CN, I'll try to dig deep and make it interesting. I need some food and a shower! (watched baseball all day)... Accually, now I want to make him LN, and say he was forced to run with thieves for survival....
Background information:
Looking for adventure was never difficult for Anaikeos. Life in Calimshan is in the hands of the next thief or cut throat. Some think the main temptation for the criminals of the desert is gold, but Calimshan's desnians know better. Power is sweeter then gold. Anaikeos was inconspicuos at first. Son of a hard working father, his aspirations were not high. His ethic for work was inexorable and meticulous. Making decorative clocks is accually a lucritive buisness in the desert, compaired to the rest of the legit occupations. At the age of 13, Anaikeos was able to work mechanically with unmatched precision and speed. His psyionic powers where creeping up on him, so slowly and subtely, it was unnoticable. Anaikeos's father was proud, but jealousy crept in. Tragicly, Anaikeos was expelled from his home at 16, and left to fend for himself. He was almost forced to run with the crowds he did, which was thieves. Anaikeos wasn't dextrous in any way, at the time, he was 16, just over 6ft tall, with skinny shoulders and a barrel chest. The barrel shape continued to throughout the midsection. His role was a combatant, not with a sword or bow, but with powers of his mind. His companions thought he was a wizard, because Anaikeos carried around an old book to keep his powers subtle. The offensive sector of his psionic power was revealed in a robbery gone bad. At the time Anaikeos was the "useless one," so his job was the decoy... As it turned out, 5 armed guards armed with scimitars had him cornered. In the moments before his death, he screamed with rage and stomped on the ground in flustration, but the emotion expelled through his foot, knocking all the attackers to the ground. Anaikeos fled Calimsham after stirring up far too much trouble, and now Travels Farune is search of power.

V and tiki: sorry I had to bug out like that so suddenly. My wife knew we weren't playing, so I really couldn't give a reason for not going. This will not happen if and when we do actually start playing.
As I mentioned before, I will not be available this coming weekend, so it looks like next weekend for me. We should really set a definite time, and if people want to show up before hand to chill out, then that's cool. I'm beginning to despair of us actually all getting together at the same time, though...

It shouldn't be any problem #working' your character in and out of the story...since the first 'phase' seems to be taking place in a nearby temple, and we have a 'base' of operations, your character could just return to base if necessary.

Oh, and as for supplies, don't we start with supplies? I know Telana has everything she needs already. I think it would save time if everyone went through the PHB and picked out their own supplies. The only one who has 'finnished' the introduction so far is WS. Since the most of you hasn't finnished it yet I thought we could go through the introduction for all of you in the next session (WS could then sleep a little bit longer if he wants to as well ). The reason I thought Inition should finnish the intro before the session is because he can't join until late in the session. So if his character is allready 'in the game' he can join in the fun at once.
Skaarjj: if you have any problems with the sheet give me (or tiki?) a 'call' on ICQ and we'll help you sort it out

Except... I dunno how. Talked with V and WS over icq today, and got the starter info, so I've gone ahead and downloaded the handbook, and am currently trying to get open RPG downloaded as well. I've even got myself time to actually play when everyone else will, too. (imagine that)
So! What does everyone think? Seeing as how I have the chance to completely noobify an already established game, I'm more than willing to wait until a new campaign starts up and get my feet wet there. Or, if you all don't mind, I could get a backstory written (probably by later tonight, my time) and try and set up a character sheet.
Like I said, I've gotten the blessings, but I'm nervous about jumping in and slowing playing progress with an established group of players. Your call, guys.

Well, njuice, personally I don't have a problem with new players, and if we were going to have one you'd be a good addition. The only thing I'm worried about is the fact that we are already having problems getting everyone together at the same time. The more people we get, the less likely it is that we'll all be able to get together. If you have no problems with our current meeting time (originally 0500 GMT, but 0600 GMT this week), then I don't see a problem.
Oh, and I wouldn't worry about slowing us down... that would be pretty difficult at this point.

Background! Get that thing up, Njuice! Let's see that character!
Actually, Master Suho, with the way that V ahs set up our base, I don't think there will be any probs with people coming and going...though sometimes that can be annoying...the more, the merrier (well, within limits....I once played in a campaign with over 20 people...we had three DMs...that was chaotic!).
On with the game! Errr....yeah. Hehe...

Well, if you say so, WS--you know more than the rest of us do at this point. I'm interested in seeing how this is going to work out.
OK, njuice, get cracking! Less than 24 hours left now...

Actually, I think it's Vs call...and if he's ok with it, then I think everything will work out fine...
Master Suho needs more meds...and some shocktreatment. Come along Master Suho...I got a key to The Basement...hehe...
I think I'll leave him 'on' all night...hehe...

*rubs hands together* Alrighty then, let's get this show on the road, eh? I'll give a background for my character, and we'll take it from there, eh? Okay. Let's have it then. (btw, I talked to V over ICQ, and he said everything should be cherry.)

Darius Met'rell
As all great stories begin, this one will as well; with the birth of a child named Darius, to a blacksmith and a house wife. They housed in a small town at the edge of the sea, and was often found to be the focal point of military actions, being it at it's key locale.
At the tender age of twelve, Darius was taught by his father the ways to world, in a home-schooled course that spanned til he grew to be 18. He was taught how to read, write, and more importantly, read people. Though raised in a strict and obiding household, Darius somehow found himself in trouble more than not. By the time he was 17, he'd been caught stealing from venders almost a dozen and a half times.
This infuriated his father, who tried everything under the sun to convince his son to use the skills he was given for much better than theivery. It was that summer of his eighteenth year that the wars broke out. The town was put on heavy alert, and during the middle of night, after a week of being in lock down, it was attacked from sea. Houses were burnt, churches demolished, innocent people killed. It was later blamed on a clerical error.
With the town in near-rubble, the remaining townsfolk buried their dead and moved on. Darius and his father among them, though he left behind his mother and two siblings, both toddler boys. However, the two ventured off the trail of the other travelers, and set to make home in the wilderness, remaining near the sea.
Four months after building and living in a small three room make-shift house on the beach, Darius' father was struck ill, and required medical attention. Making his way to the nearest town, he was picked up by a platoon of knights making a round. The judgement was swift and harsh, and was for Darius to be imprisoned for eighteen months. He sat in a prison for over a month, fully well knowing that his father was much too ill to take care of himself, and knew inside that he was now without family. As luck would have it, his transport date was set in conjunction with an organized counter strike by the defending kingdom. In admist the chaos, Darius escapes, and finds quick work as a merchant pirate three days later.
It's been two years since taking that job, and his ship has docked for good. The wars are over, and the work seems to have all but dried up. Taking his cue to do what he does best; wander, Darius leaves the 'Moonlight Inn' for the last time, and ventures away from the sea that he sometimes considers his third parent.

Hehe, I get creative and was on a roll, forgive the length of it
Anyways, that's my character, in a nutshell. If you all were in the middle of something, I left it open enough that I could be introduced in a lot of different ways, storyline is kinda important after all. He's a human, and a thief. But not a really bad thief, just bad enough to steal something to get by and not feel that bad about it. Being that as it may, I'll leave the next step to you guys. Lemme know what I gotta do, hehe.
Like I said, I've downloaded the player handbook, but I don't have a copy of adobe reader on my computer anymore, and I can't seem to get anything from any of the adobe servers. Maybe it's just me, maybe not, I dunno. I'll get it one way or another.
As for the time (alright, I'll shaddap in a sec), if my math is correct (and it rarely is...), I'll be meeting you folks at 11:00 PM Friday night, for me. I'm in the US, PST timezone, so I'm -8:00 GMT... again, by my math. If I'm wrong, lemme know. Like I said before, I've been living under a rock.
Happy hunting, folks.
