i lost a very important directory when messing around, trying to merge two partitions without checking them for errors first. |

I hate to tell you this, but when messing around with partitions there is practically zero chance of any type of file recovery. The reason is that sector of your HD containing the information was probably overwritten when the partitions were merged. |

TestDisk is what I used when I had those 'complications' with my HDD's partition table. Depending on how much your partitioning program already had done before crashing it may or may not be able to guess where the original partitions were and recover them. |
