Ok...Short scenario: My brother has a PS2 and Metal Gear Solid 2. I downloaded a PS2 emulator, and am trying to burn an image of the game onto my hard drive as an ISO. Nero isn't recongnzing my DVD-R/RW Drive with MGS2 in it, and when it does (it did once) I can't figure out how to burn the image onto my hard drive. Could somebody please enlighten me on this?

(Note: I/My brother owns the game, so this shouldn't be a problem regarding the Warez rules, I hope. If it is, fell free to shut it down, of course...)

Suprisingly, this doesn't violate copyright...if you own the game you are legally allowed to have an emulator and use the CD to play the game on your PC, at least that's always been my understanding of the way emulators work (legally that is).

Ok, anyway, you don't burn the image onto your hard disk, and your not going ot be able to do squat if your burning program won't recognise your drive, although for hte purposes of making an image it should be able to recognise any drive, all it's got to do is pull the data off it. Things become legally tricky thoguh if you then intend to put it onto another CD. I think you may have to get your emulator to just read from the CD and then you and your brother are going to have to work out with each other about when each of you can play it.

Yeah, the copyright part of that is legit if you own the original cd.

I'm not sure if Nero can burn to an ISO since they use a proprietary format (.nrg). Your best bet would be to check your Nero documentation, or check on the web for ISO burning options.

well, first, nero should have no problem doing this, i use nero to backup 1:1 ALL my cds and have had no problems with it as of yet makin coasters.
there's actually a forum that's of GREAT help (at least it was to me)
*digging to find it*
found it!! http://clone.cd/phpBB/

they are very strict about the warez issue also. i haven't been there for awhile, but i know they can help you with backing up your ps2 game
good luck

Thanks for the help, but I'm not trying to make a direct copy.

What I'm trying to do is rip the PS2 DVD to my hard drive in an ISO format, so that my emulator (PCSX2) will run it, as it only runs games in an ISO format.

Umm...I'd contiune the info here, but it needs some explanation of Warez, so click here (I hope this will get around the Asylum rules)

Umm...Pretty much.

what version of nero are you running? i have 5.5 so that's what i'm going offa. have your ps2 game in the drive
if you open nero and click on "new compilation" it gives you the option of making an iso file.
in the file browser on the right, select the drive that you're cd is in and when it brings it up, select all the files in the window and drag and drop them to the window on the left.
you basically do the same if you were copying a cd 1:1....you just don't write it to the cd, instead, you leave it on your hard drive.
also make sure you you don't have "multisession" checked.
i hope that helps you out.
also, that forum that i sent you to, you should be able to ask them there and i'm sure they'd be able to help you. they're pretty good about that.

Lacuna: Thanks, that did work...Or should I say, It would of worked. Your instructions worked great, but then I realized that I didn't have enough space on my HD for a 5gig rip. Argh! See, I only have a 10gig (10,000rpm) SCSI drive and a 20gig IDE drive.

Aww well, I guess when I clear up some more space I'll try it again.

Thanks.

I think they use DVDs.. so you'd need a DVD burner, and blank DVDs. (Which hold much more information than CDs)

Yup...You need a DVD...Recently, I've been using a DVD-R/RW at my Dad's work, but can't burn any of my ISO's that I've made, because it's a goverment computer. I'd wait though before going out and spending a good $300 on a DVD burner because there is no standard format, it seems as if -R is winning, but +R is gaining a lot of popularity. I've never used +R, but I've heard that they burn slower than a -R. Of course, this is of no consequence to me, but some people like to spend a bajillion dollars on the highest end drive.

HP just released a +/-R drive (?) recently, but I'm not sure of that.

Either way, I'd wait to buy one untill there is a standard, and they drop in price. You might be able to stick the ISO on a cheap hard drive though. I've been searching on DirtCheapDrives and [http://outpost.com]Fry's[/url] for a cheap drive, and have periodically found 120 gig drives for as low as 60 bucks, which isn't bad because your getting a higher speed drive (Make sure that it's SuperIDE, as opposed to a DVD) for less price per gig (PPG?).

Thats the only real input that I can give...Sorry that I can't be of much help, but my experience with DVD burners just isn't as vast as others.

Umm... Actually, this might voilate copyright laws.

AFAIK, Almost every emulator requires a ROM image to run, not a game ROM image, but the bit of software that will run the hardware of the machine. In this case, it'd be writtn by Sony and I doubt they'd be releasing the PS2 ROM image data to the public for at least another 8 years or so. Hell, last I knew, the PS1 ROM image was still protected under copyright laws of some kind.

Even if I am wrong, just because your "brother" owns it doesn't mean you can copy it and play it on your PC. Copy it to another DVDR and play it in a real PS2 maybe but on the PC while there's functional PS2 hardware in the same residence... I reckon you could still get done for that as I'm sure a backup made and 'used' in this way would be deemed illegal. You might want to check Sonys copyright laws regarding emulators.

NB: I might be using the term ROM incorrectly here, might be BIOS... I haven't run an emulator for a very long time.

This is certainly at the limit of what we allow here and i'm minded to shut this down. I don't really know enough about the specifics to call this one.

[edit: and I'm going to err on the side of caution as this is only technically legal as long as everyone follows the "of course I have the game" formula (not that I'm saying anyone here isn't being truthful) and that is not really good enough for me.

If anyone has a problem with that then drop me a line]
