they probably think it blew apart because the SRB took off on their merry way when the left one blew... I think I read that on a 'common NASA myths'or some shite website a while back...

edit- in light of what happened, I didn't want to mention it, but I really hope this doesn't bring the space project down. It seems like the goverment in recent year has been trying to shut NASA down and this looks like the perfect excuse to do so. NASA's been on a joke of a budget for a while now they've made some good stuff with it- I just hope that, no matter the cost (human life notwithstanding), the dream of space as an everyday frontier remains a goal the human race can be united in- despite politics and the cost in lives...

Seven people died on their way home, but on the exact same moment seven hero's were born.

quote:
"Do we really have to come back?" astronaut David Brown jokingly asked Mission Control before the ride home.

Ironical...

I'm right know thinking on the families from the shuttle crew and about their loss. Anyone knows a link where we can support them?

I don't believe this will bring the end to NASA. I do, however, believe this is the beginning of the end to an outdated shuttle design. I expect an almost complete revision of NASA's approach to safety issues. The next generation of shuttle has been discussed for years and is long overdo. I mean, the current shuttle is as old as I am and just look at the kinds of technological and aerospace advancements we've had in my lifetime.

I do have to say that, given the nature of space travel, I'm surprised we've had as few accidents as we've had. Re-entry at mach 8 seems to me an extremely touchy procedure. I was thinking to myself just weeks ago that it's amazing every touchdown has gone as well as it's had.

It is really sad to hear that news. The shuttle was flying 21.000km/h. It is out of imagination. I really wish this will never happen again.
