Preserved Topic: File associations driving me nuts!

Hey,

I'm running WinXP and for some reason I cannot get my file associations to work with me. All I want is for my image files (gif, jpg, png, tiff etc.) to be associated with PhotoshopCS. I've installed Creative Suite CS and it didn't override FireworksMX, or give me the option of choosing what to associate with it (like it did when I just had Photoshop CS 'long story'). Anyways, I've been into my Folder Options and changed the associations I wanted but it still doesn't show it... the files do open in Photoshop however, but all the image icons are Fireworks still. I don't know why I let these kinds of things bug me, I'm just a perfectionist wanna-be. What am I missing? Shouldn't changing in my Folder Options associate it entirely with PhotoshopCS? Is this a sign that I need to convert to Mac? Why does Windows torcher me so? Thanks for any help. Peace.

I don't have a definite answer to your question because I'm a Mac-ie myself, but on OSX, you just "get info" (apple-i) on the file you wanna mess with, and there's an "open with" option, which you can also have change all of your .___ files to..

I bring it up because maybe there's a similar thing on Windows somewhere.. I don't know, but at times the two OS's aren't as different as it might seem. (Especially since they constantly try to copy each other.)

Make sure FwMX does not auto re-associate those file types to it. I had the same problem with Winamp and Real Audio. RA sucks, but since i kept forgetting i needed to change file associations, i kept seeing that fucking ugly ra icon :P

My choice is to remove the associations entirely so the files don't know where they are going. Right click on one of them and move to "Open With..." -> "Choose program" Choose photoshop CS from the list and BEFORE clicking okay make sure the "Always open files of this type with this program" checkbox is checked. Do that for your other image file types and that should do it. If it kicks back to Fireworks... then there is a setting inside Fireworks to deal with that I, unfortunately, cannot help you with.

redroy: The icons show the wrong program, but they open in the right one?

Usually programs have an option to associate file types to the program, if you associate them (even if they are already working) it should set the correct icons.

Also, dumb question, but anyway, did you changed manually the icons? When you manyually change the program associated, they dont automatically change icons, you have to set it manually as well.

It sounds to me as if you associated the image types with PhotoShop. The problem you are having is that the icon for the images are still associated with Fireworks. The fact the images open in PhotoShop when you click them means the association is OK.

If you go back to the Options Menu you will see a button that will allow you to change the icon you want assocoated with the file type. The icons are probably stored in the PhotoShop.exe file or they may be in one of the *.dll files associate with photoshop.
