The CSS box model is correct in the Gecko browsers. And FireFox 0.8 sticks to that rule.

How do they expect hype to be generated about it if they keep changing the name?

*reads faq*

Gah, me thinks the marketing people over there need to be shot... maybe the fox won't fux up my computer as much as the bird did. I wonder if ThunderBird will be renamed to ThunderFox? Although, at least the design of the Mozilla website is looking much more "mainstream consumer" orientated than it did since AOL & MS hammered the last few nails into Netscape's coffin.

Ooh.. have a proper installer now. Yay!

-- pio, I've always found the speed of Phoenix/FB/FF to be roughly equal with if not better than IE for most general DHTML animation, which is usually the most performance critical aspects aside major DOM Tree manipulation; what speed issues are you encountering?

I also didn't like the changing of the name. What FireFox has better than FireBird? I can't see anything. BTW, they changed the name but forgot to change the about:mozilla message.

As for performance issues, the worst one I had was with tree manipulation, as you said. FB is ten or more times slower than IE when rendering big XML pages. And besides being slow in this task, it also freezes, making it look like the app has crashed. Sporadically, I found one or another page, in the Internet, where Firebird is slow to render, and when this happens I switch to IE. I haven't figured out a reason for it - I haven't tried also.

Yep, the import of the bookmarks, themes, extensions is automatic. The only thing that have not been imported is my list of search engines in the Search bar.

Cameron: Renaming ThunderBird in ThunderFox, would bring a higher brand consistency.

My test consist in moving and resizing 48 images ( between 256x8 and 256x384 ) the whole thing being clipped by the overflow:none CSS rule of their parentNode. That test runs @ ~100fps in IE5.0+, ~33fps in MZ1.4+, and ~8fps in FB0.7+

[edit]

viol: the Press Release explains the reasons of the change of name :

quote:
The new release also marks a name change for the new browser, which was previously known as Mozilla Firebird. ?We are pleased to release a new preview version of Mozilla Firefox,? commented Mitchell Baker, President of the Mozilla Foundation. ?To avoid overlap with another open source project, we have decided to change the name of this product from Mozilla Firebird to Mozilla Firefox.?

So I started up ol Firebird, disabled "tabbrowser extensions" closed FB. Then I Fired up FireFox and it works, Yeh!! Still when I try to enable "Tabbrowser Extensions" FF will not work, it displays the same error message. But I can live with that. It may just be compatibility with that particular extension and FF. Now to take it for a testdrive.

For the Extension error. If you are using firebird and then go to install firefox you will have problems if you did not disable all of your extensions in firebird before you did the install.

quote:
First, if you are running an old version of Firebird or Phoenix, visit the Extensions panel in Tools, Options and disable all of your extensions. If you cannot disable extensions, you must create a new profile before upgrading to Firefox 0.8. If you do not do this, your browser may not work, and you may receive messages like "Cannot create XBL Binding for Browser" or "Cannot create Browser Instance". You must now look for newer versions of your extensions that are described explicitly as being compatible with Firefox 0.8.

I would make the switch from Friberid to Firefox once I figure out why my startup page looks horribly misplaced. It took me a while to make it look the same over Moz/Opera/IE/FB and now FF makes it not only look liek crap, but unusable

Thunderbird (being the email client), which I think should be renamed to ThunderFox, as mentioned above, doesn't actually "intergrate" with firebird per say. The mozilla group realised that many people didn't want intergrated web browsers and email clients, they were different applications and should be kept as such. Which has spawned the seprate product lines we now have today.

Anyways, thunderbird is an execelent email client. Much, much better than outlook IMHO. I've been using it for some time now, even before I switch to using FF as my default browser. It's organised well, handles multiple email accounts extreamly well for both IMAP and POP3 accounts (I have a couple of both), includes regular expression filtering / sorting of inccoming mail into folders and well, just about everything I've ever wanted in an email client. The auto spam management is quite nice as well. If you mark an incomming email as trash, it'll try and catch all subquent messages that are similar and treat them the same way. And of course, the contacts managment is quick simple and straightforward.

Although, it would be nice if I could find the damn extensions site for it (if there is one), as I'd love to intergrate all of my XML feeds into my email client instead of my IM client, which seems to slow my computer down a lot when I add more than 5 feeds.

<off topic> That asside, Miranda ( www.miranda-im.org ) is an execelent IM client, I'd highly recomend you look into it. It does take a bit of work to get it setup properly but I realy like this one because tt doesn't need to be installed thus I can put it on my USB disk and have it, along with all of my contacts, at university or wherever I end up. </off topic>
