So, I'm asking on behalf of my friend in Texas--what alternatives does he have to DSL for a high-speed connection? He was going to get DSL installed, but at the last minute, his apartment manager said he couldn't do it. He's looking into cable now, but if there are any other possible alternatives, he'd be glad to hear them.

Incidentally, he lives in Duncanville if that helps anyone. If you know of any specific companies he could solicit, that would be great. Thanks!

I use ATT's @home (www.home.com). If configured optimally, it works great! I get about 250kps downstream and around 100kps upstream. I haven't worked with dsl, but I hear they are similar connections.

I had problems with Cable but most of my friends like theres, I suggest getting at cable modem if its available. Also look into T1, or a T3 connection, if you have the means

T1? That's about $1000 a month. Not a viable solution for a home surfer. Mbridge - I'll have him look into that @home thing. Come to think of it, I think another friend of mine has that.
Thanks.

In my opinion DSL is the superior connection. The only other comparably priced solution is cable, which can be good, but can also put you at the mercy of your entire neighborhood's cable/web surfing habits due to shared bandwidth. This isn't generally a buge deal, but if you play games, the intermittent lag will eventually cause u to rip your hair out.

I am curious though, what say the apartment manager has with his DSL installation. The only installation to be done is installing a modem in your computer and putting phone filters on all non-DSL wall sockets. Nothing the apartment manager should even know about.

The DSL company can't do it without writeen permission from the complex and according to the apt manager, they have to put some sort of box on the outside of the building for something. Not a big deal in my opinion, but he doesn't want anything on the buildings. They keep the complex very "neat."

Tafka - I'll give him that URL and have him check it out, thanks.
