i want to put some text of a html-page, which i have marked with the mouse, into a variable.

there is a german site(http://www.mrcheck.de) which uses this functionallity. you can mark a word in the text, click on a button and you get the explanation for the marked word.

Well, not being able to read German, this sounds like Smart Tags. They use it at MSNBC.com as well. Microsoft just dumped that from Office XP and Windows XP.

hm, sorry for my bad english. i think you misunderstand my question. i was not talking about Smart Tags. I was talking about JavaScript.

Goto Mr.Check(www.mrcheck.de) mark a word with your mouse and click a the logo(!). you will get the description of the word.
