We have done so.

just my thoughts
>__< I don't like contests based on a theme... entries all look the same
and since there's no size limit ( at least I haven't seen any information about that ) so I fear the constet gonna be stuffed with heavy sites

There is no catch, no angle to speak of other than some increased exposure for my sites, which may or may not lead to some increased sales for some of the Dreamweaver Extensions we sell. I think one link is reasonable considering the prize money and there is no real hard core selling invlved on our part nor a contest entry fee etc typically assocaited with contests. My interest is in encouraging developers towards standards, seeing what the latest trends in DHTML are and really want to be blown away by some of the clever DHTML developers out there. I am putting the money up personally.

On site size, well if you give me a 1 meg site to look at and it takes lets say 5 minutes to load, do you think I would be impressed or for that matter the majority of the web would be impressed? I think it just comes down to good old fashion common sense and from that perspective I did not want to place a limit on file size. Kind of wanted this to be left to the developers / designers.

Themes, I understand the point, but i did want to have a common theme for the contest and if it goes well and we get some good sites to view out of all this, then it will be a yearly gig with a different theme each year.

If you really want to encourage web standards, then I suggest that instead of just merely saying that it should work in IE and Mozilla, that you say it should do that without using any of their nonstandard extensions. =)

Guess it's very unlikely people will start creating huge sites for this contest. The images will probably be quite expensive, but I think every good web-developer will automatically check the weight of his site... I do think the price money's a pity though. Contests can be a fun challenge, but I think respect is what most contestants will be
after. I know I am..

as long as it validates as XHTML then that is a standards based page. One of the things developers will be struggling with in future is having pages validate with custom attributes , so if they want to use something custom, then they need to think about it from a validation point of view

BTW i agree with the respect side of things being more important than monetary gains, but at the same time, i think its good to sweeten the pot a little so to speak. I dont think having a small prize incentive detracts from the contest.

Wow, Zeldman just said good stuff about this.

I still think you should at least *encourage* people to stick to the DOM =)

Oh, and I recommend you set your web page's background color to white - white isn't the default on all systems (i have mine set to a light green to reduce contrast), and when you mix it with white images, it looks sort of weird.

psych3: you're right concerning the size of the entries. But IMHO the price money will bring you many average/huge entries
And $1000 is a pot compared to the $51.20 of the5k.org

Hmmm... a $1,000 dollars is not a trivial amount, that much is certain. It will be very interesting to see what people come up with.

I recognize that you probably have no intention to change the rules now that you've gone public, especially not just because *I* mentioned something. =) But one thing that sort of bothers me is the requirement for "at least 5 pages". That gives me no choice but to some how split up my entry into at least five parts. Granted, they could be similar, but they'd need to be separate somehow. It keeps me from being able to focus all my work in one single piece. I understand that 5 pages can compose one piece of art, but one page can compose one piece of art just as well, if that's what the artist wanted.

I'm also not crazy about the theme, it doesn't inspire me personally. Something less specific may have been a good idea.

In any case, don't be discouraged by my comments, 'cause I think in general the contest is a good idea.

Page looks better now with the white background, BTW. You might want to preload the menu mouseovers. Sorry for giving you a site review here =)

Just to clarify; it can be one peice, eg it can be a single interface and externally load 5 pages or more into the document, that would count as 5 seperate pages.

by 5 pages I mean that would should be submited should be like a typical site structure. eg, about, contact, home, portfolio, prices etc... Its still a single peice in my book, just that people would need to bind it together somehow so that if flows. I guess what my aim was with that condition is to have it more like a functional site rather than something like a particular cool effect. Cool effects are welcome of course, but it has to be in the context of site rather than a stand alone example.

Yeah I cant change much now, other than to clarify issues for people as they pop up. For example, i was asked if it could be a team entry and i clarified on the site that it could be, so issues like that can and will crop up and I will amend accordingly, but the rules need to stay intact now as its public.

Hope that clarifies things?

Im looking forward to some neat entries from the people that frequent this forum.

ps. its not me that has to inspire people, its people who has to inspire me :-)

I don't wanna start a big row over here , but I prefer a specific subject over a global term like "philosophy" or something. And I think "Life Is But A Dream" does give you enough freedom to erz.. freak out .

Sounds like fun. I like the theme, can produce an inseresting site with that in mind (I hope )

Is server side scripting (php, perl) allowed?
