I know that ctrl+alt+clicking on a layer will alter your selection to include only those parts that *DON'T* overlap the layer you clicked on. |

Try pressing ctrl-shift-I (or select>inverse) and then try again. that should work. |

Sure, just shift-ctrl-alt click, to select the intersecting amounts. your cursor will become a little box with an "x" in it, for "intersecting". |
