Okay I have had a million years of graphic experience but about 5 seconds of web publishing. Got Photoshop down, but dont have a clue what to do next... aside from sarcasm, can anybody point me in the direction I need to go to create a web page using what I have done? Nothing detailed.... a book... a website.... a gun. Any suggestions will be appreciated. |

are you looking for a program to use or a place that will help you start to finish in getting a site up? |

Actually just direction..... I have Dreamweaver.... (though I dont understand much about it) and Pagemill. Being strictly on the artistic/print end of the business forever, its difficult knowing where to begin. Theres just so much out there and it gets overwhelming trying to figure out which step to take first. |

Ok, to be honest, when you say you have a million years of Photoshop experience Im not sure if your some kid who just discovered Eye Candy or an actual experienced designer. Im not being sarcastic or anything, Im being serious. I mean it because you just sound like a kid, not that Im an adult. If your serious into learning about web design, you should learn basics such as HTML first. Other stuff such as CSS and JavaScript would also be useful. If your just beginning with a wide knowlegde in Photoshop you already have a jump on everyone else just starting out. My suggestions would be to find whatever you can on HTML, and theres plenty written, and read it. Once you understand how HTML works look at more advanced stuff. Learn how to use Dreamweaver and start looking online for some tutorials for various things. |

Heh heh. OK, you have all of this experience with traditional graphics work, where to go next? You have to lerarn the HTML stuff of course, because you have to present your work on the web. One of the newere *design* things you're going to have to work with is actual interactive interface design. Lots of fun, but way different from designing for print. You can actually change the way the print (screen) looks as people look at it! From a design point of view you're actually designing several pages for each "page" you present. Oragnaizing your material is also of prime importance, how you organize your material will define what kind of options any interface you build will have. Can folks actually find what they're looking for? Can they find their way back if they take a wrong turn? These are the kinds of questions we ask ourselves as we work. All of this poop falls under the heading of "information architecure", and it's at the core of designing a good website. Check out those links at the gurusnetwork, and look over some of the more basic (yet technical) issues about handling graphics for the net. I used to work print, with all of my images at 300dpi, but now I work with a setting of 72dpi and my maximum image size of maybe 600 pixels wide! It's a different world, but way faster in terms of processing time! |
