Hey!!! This may not be news to you all, but I just found it out.

Lots of people have been asking how to make transparent gifs in PS6, now that they have made gif89a less available. The standard answer is to make a transparent layer with your content, delete the background layer, File>Save For Web, selecting a matte color if desired.

But here's a slick way that does not use Save For Web. Uses a flattened image. Image>Mode>Indexed Color. So far, so normal. Now: Image>Mode>Color Table. The dialog that opens has an eyedropper tool. Using this, click the color you wish to be transparent (either in the color table grid itself or in the image) and there you go - it's transparent!

Nice, eh? Why'd it take me so long to figure it out?

Great tip! I've been going back to photoshop 5.5 to do that sorta stuff...kinda was one of the things that bother me about ps6.0.

thanks alot...

here's another issue maybe some of you could shed some light on....
in photoshop 5.5 you could use the text tool, a cool (or not so cool) window would come up.
I could type in a word, highlight it, then place focus into the font field and arrow up or arrow down
and immediately see what my logo/word was gonna look like. I MISS THIS.

Any work arounds?

I've been just pulling up ps 5.5 and doing that , then using ps6 to actually work on it.

Steve, you are a far more experienced man than i, so, i hesitate but... why not try....going to..

>the Photoshop CD>Goodies>Optional Plug Ins>Photoshop Only>Export>Gif89a...and then just install it.

i realize that probably makes it easy and that is cheating around here but hey...i like simple.

CB - until I learned the trick I described above, your suggetion of going into the goodies folder to get gif89a was what I prescribed to al the frustrated 5.x folk. It's still cool, but this seems cooler. (BTW - gif89a is still awesome. It ain't cheating if it gets the job done as well as something else!)

Euphoric One: I'm not sure I fully understand your dilemma - what can you not see in the PS6 paradigm that you could see in PS 5.5 with regards to type??

Great tip Steve, I also had been getting annoyed using the save for web option all the time.
I did not know about the goodies foler thing on the CD either, I think I will install that tonight so I can have the choice of both options
