Preserved Topic: i failed with the search tool

hi everyone, ive been on this board a long long time, i make good use of the search tool(eplains why this is first message). here is some back ground; new to photoshop okay i dont understand channels much, and i found out that channels are explained in Doc ozone, the basics of photoshop tutorial. ive been to the hands on sight, but i cant find it. could i get a link and some info on channels plz?

think of colur mixing.. (as in add different colurs together ot get a new colur)

a ps channel hold colour info.. so if we take a rgb document it will contain 3 channels.. red , green , blue... when composited these channels will represent the final image... so on a channel level , your doc is actually represented as 3 distinct channels that when added to each other produce the final image......

the nice thing about this is that channels are editable.. i.e you can manipulate them.. play with them.. experiment with them.. its all about flexibilty..

look at your base image and just look past it and see that your actualy looking at a composite of channels that when added together make up the final image..

Channels can also be used for lighting effects height maps, and building displacement maps. and storing selections. and...I forgot the rest.

I live in the states, and I say colour. I also say honour. Sometimes I even say cheque or theatre. Does anybody remember centimetres?

Channels are fun, so I'm gonna toss another log onto the fire.

Start up your RGB doc with a black background. New Layer. Draw some doodles with white. Now, go to Red and (try to) do some painting with a shade of grey.

Neat, huh? Anybody know what this feature is called?

warjournal, i did your little comment, i used an airbrush to make some doodles, then i went to the red channel and make some more. i bet u dont understand how well that opened up my understanding of channels. im wondering if your a teacher or something hehe. i used a shade of grey in the red channel and the color ended up a light blue, im wondering how that would happen i was thinking it would be pink.
after reading this board for a while, i began to relealize that vogonpoet was a little too smart to be from the usa, sad thing was it took me months to learn that people from other countries spelled things differnt.

LOL Actually, I was going for the you-can-only-paint-on-opaque-pixels-when-painting-in-a-channel thing. Which is something that I've learned to take advantage of, especially when doing a complex D-Map.

No, not a teacher, but I used to do a lot of tutoring in back in high school. After some frustrating sessions in algebra, I started using `2+2=4` philosophy. If something doesn't make sense, just back up to where things do make sense and start building up again. One time I actually took a fellow student all the way back down to addition. If you don't understand the foundation, then how can you understand the extrapolations?

Sometimes it's starting with simple examples and getting more complex until the light clicks on.

WJ, that is neat, but for it to work in PS6, you have to use a transparent bg. With a black bg, the grey on the red channel paints a tighter red line everywhere.
