I was wondering what Adobe PhotoShop Elements is used for and/or what it does... Is there any point in geting it, is it useful???

So basically: Forget it... You can do the exact same stuff in PS right...

So la, la, laa... Glad I didn't get because of my need for all things Adobe...

you can do a whole lot more in PS.. if you want to be finnicky about it but then that is reflected in the price I would guess.. mebbe ..

PhotoMerge looks interesting. I don't really care for stitching photos together by hand. Getting all those Free Transforms just right, then using Layer Mask all over the place. Then again, I haven't done stitching in a long time. Just curious.

I also wonder how well it handles extraction. Again, just curious.

Other than those two curiosities, I don't really see anything that interesting that can't already be done in PS.

Heh. Geared for dummies. Umm... dumbs down PS stuff.

There is a toolbar with stuff in it. Duh! Well, this is one of the major GUI things. My guess is that it's laid out like PS 6.0, but I can't say for sure.

Filters. It's drop-down that shows thumbnail previews of what the filter does. Several options browsing the filters. Bascially makes finding the filter you want to use easier to find if you don't know the stock filter set (Artistic, Render, etc...)

Recipes are rather disappointing. Bascially mini-tuts. 1), Magnetic Lasso; 2) Select an area; 3) Feather it; 4) Rinse; 5) Repeat. ~snore~

Effects are kind of neat. Basically Action sets with a preview. Select the Effect (Action set) you want to apply. If you don't want it, just decline and it undoes the whole thing (no need to back up the History). Not really that innovative, just conveniant.

File Browser if pretty cheesie.

Came with samples for test PhotoMerge (go figger). Check it out: carpan.jpg 115k. Took around 1 min to do. Not a bad job of stitching, IMHO.

Enhance > Color > Color Cast. Basically color correction ala Steve's Curves tut. Just click on an area that should be white, gray or black and it goes to work for you.

Few other things I don't feel like mentioning right now.

All in all, I don't really care for it. But it does seem like a decent alternative for the hobbiest ($$$).

First the good part... You got PS-power on a budget.
It is easy to learn (less to know easier to do)
Photo-Merge is easy and good (should be in ps!)
Layer blend mode is still there.
Help is good (even on the trial)
This pic is made in PSE (photoshop elements) Without any extern filter program!
PSE Even can use the same technique as PS to make shure the pic on screen has the same colors as the pic on print.

Ok now what is missing in PSE?

-No channels to edit. (tho you can use the red, blue, green channel for lightning fx, you could put shapes on layer instead off channel and then merge with original layer.) It is possible to use old psd's with their channels i heard (did not try yet)

-No way to save an selection (work around: new layer, fill selection with color, make layer invisible, name layer selection1)

-You could use RGB, Indexed or grey colors no CMYK or Pantone colors.
(do you ever use this last two? i don't)


In short: If you don't need prepress facilities but only web facilities it is a very good program. Do you like to stitch pics together? get it It is not exactly the same as PS5.x Light. Which was an realy bad thing. You can do all the same things you could do with PS i think.
But you pay a hell of a lot less....! If you doubt about buying a tablet or PS6 get PSE and the Tablet!
