Preserved Topic: How do you do that surveillance camera effect?

I am still trying to figure out how to do that very common interlaced effect (like on a surveillance camera, where every other line is missing). A similar effect is used on the 'Ozone' banner at the bottom of the page, although I'm trying to apply that to a picture. Any ideas?

1) search the archives here for the subject 'scanlines'

2) try this:

create a file, 2 x 2 pixels in size with a transparent background.

on a new layer, draw a black line across the top 2 pixels of the image. use the pencil tool.

Save that file as 'lines.psd' (or whatever)


to apply it to an image:

select >> all (or ctrl+A) on the layer with the lines.

edit >> define pattern
in the image you want to apply it to, make a new layer above all else.

edit >> fill >> pattern

this will fill the layer with horizontal lines.

check the 'presereve transparency' box for that layer, incase you want to fill them with a different color or a gradient.

play with blending modes to get the desired effect.

You mean that scanlines effect?,

Make a pattern in photoshop,

open a new document make a 10x10 px, then add 1 line black 1 line white until finish, then select all and make it a pattern. apply it making a new layer and filling it with the pattern, then use multiply layer blend mode, or any other that you like, and play with opacity until you think it looks good.

ps. You really make a 10x10 pic for scanlines?? you like making things hard?

I often use the 'textureizer' <-sp? filter (custom texture) with a 1px X 2 to 6 px high (black & white bands of varing thickness) image for scanlines.

But be warned, if your try and scale a 1x* image below 100% in the textureizer ps will crash. I'm really not kidding, save your workbefore hand as I often forget this, then again you could just use a 10x10 pic which you solve the problen, but I'm just too lazy.

Overall it Gives slightly different effect.

its not the hard way the problem is that my machine is very shitty and a 2x2 patter takes longer to load than a 10x10 so at the end its easier.

and i've never use texturizer, i dont use texture frequently. i really dont use many filter, i think distortions and blurs filters thats it, what i do is airbrush stuff and that doesnt requires filters.

you see, when i fill something (a shape, a layer, etc.) with a 2x2 pattern, here in my machine it takes more time to load (or fill) than if i use a 10 x 10 pattern.

Dont know if you are going to notice it in your machine but heres a 2x2 pattern fill, and a 10 x 10 pattern fill.

yes, but we're not talking a background image for a web page.....we're talking a file to use when working within photoshop.....

and, for the record, my 'what?' was aimed more at drac's post than yours

Thanks a million for the help. It's exactly the effect I was going for. I found it looked a bit better with thicker lines (3pix, with a layer at 60% opacity), they almost look graduated.

ok, thats was like a prove, a simulation for a fill in photoshop.

didnt find any other way to explain it with examples.

1573 - ok, gotcha. never noticed any lag on my computer - and it's an old (obsolete) peice of crap.

drac - oh. hasn't happened in quite a while (that I recall anyway) so I didn't quite get the reference.
