Hi

Well I just did the glass tutorial, but I can't seem to make those neat coloured highlights that the Doctor made in the psd file. In the file these highlight derives from a mask (Alpha 1), how do I make this? I've allready tried handbrushing it and then blurring, but it then becomes way to unprecise.

Sorry about any type/spelling errors.

Well, the easiest way to make the channel mask would be to make a circular selection in the channel. Use a selection that is smaller than the glass ball but keep it centered. Then, while holding alt, make another circular selection above and to the left of the original. This will subtract the original selection from the new selection giving you a nice crescent shape.

Now, fill it in with white and deselect. Then, run an appropriate gaussian blur. That should give you a nice highlight mask to use.

I appreciate your answer, thanks.

I did try this method once, but I had a big time trying to align the crescent shape...practice, practice and practice I guess.

What is wrong with people reading that glass tutorial, I have red it all and understand it all of it, and it mostly the channel section it stage 2. Doc I would really re-read that glass tutorial and make it simpler or make it so people understand what?s going on, because people are get confused over it (I don't know how it's very simple reading anyway) .If you could put your tutorials in three sections like easy, intermediate and hard, think it would help people of all stages of there skills with PS. Just a tho .

Actually, most problems occur over things people usually overlook.

Punisherolsen, to align your crescent, set guidelines to the center of the circle. To do this, go to channels and then click on the "Mask of selection channel". Then pull the guides from top and side and they should automatically align to the center of the circle.

Now, the circle is centered. Grab the circular marque and hold alt and shift to start the circle from the center and constrain it to a circle. Make the selection smaller than the original circle. Once that's done, just use the circular marque to cut the circle to a crescent. It might take a few tries, but just hit ctrl-z if you make a mistake.

Darkshadow, you have to realize that people have varying levels of skill and knowledge. Doc has written the tut as clear as he can, but sometimes there's that tiny bit of info (like using the guides to center the selection) that you may not know. Little tidbits of PS info that are largely overlooked. What's easy for you may stump other people who breeze over things you can't even attempt yet.

Basically, learning PS is not linear. You learn things here and things there and you improve your knowledge bit by bit. And if you get stuck, you come here and ask a few q's. Simple, no?

And, yes, POlsen: practice, practice, practice.

If I may, a simpler way to get your crescent:

Select the transparency of the original circle layer (ctrl+click on the layer)

Create a new channel

Contract your circle by one (or two) Edit >> Modify >> Contract

Fill with white.

Nudge the selectio up and to the left (or right) 1 or 2 pixels.

Fill with black.

Done.

And Darkshadow - based on the advice you handed out to adaline on this tutorial, I'd say you have a less complete understanding of it than you think you do. Also, if I recall correctly (been a long time since I've looked at the tutorial), he doesn't explain how to make that crescent mask....believe he intentionally left that part out.

Okay, I got it right now. Thanks to all of you.

I solved the crescent problem by saving the original cirkel as a channel, loaded transparency, nudged the selection and filled with black in the channel. Voila! ;O)

Heh, why didn't I thought of this before. Well I learned.

How long have you guys been working with PS? I've used it now for approx. 2 years, consider myself as a experienced user (well I'm over the filter-it! period atleast , but still I'm learning every day. I guess the conclusion is that Photoshop is indeed very wide ranged and thorough.

How long have I been ising PS, well about One year and 2 months. I meet it in college and from that day I have not move or looked at an other drawing program. I aswell I am still learning new things every day and new ways to get the same result. I think that you can't stop learning a program like PS becuase there is so many ways of doing things with it.

DL-44: Your right about my advice, I am not that good at explaining things to others in words (I perfare images) becuase I have my ways of doing the same things that are in tuts. I tryed to explain it as the doc worte it, but as you see I can't .
