look at the distored effect on the train... http://www.nycrail.com/images/207yd_7_10_01/r110b2001_0710AR.JPG

(my train is at http://www.masteratwork.com/4d/2train.jpg and as you can see the texture is just too clean and plain)

I have experimented with virtually all the goddamn distort filters and others but I can't seem to get this one right. what am I missing?

Welcome, Master.

I`m afraid there is no filter for this one. what you`re seeing in the first pic is reflections of the surrounding environment on dented, rippled metal. Only way I know to get then there is create them. Get in there with the airbrush and paint them in a new layer, set to overlay, screen, or whichever blending mode works best with the colors/textures you made.

Or, you can create a displacement map and displace an existing bg to fit. Ask Steve

I will be creating this in Photoshop to be used as a texture (inc. bump map) on a 3D model (using Cinema 4D).

have so far tried distort filters (glass, wave, etc) but haven't found the perfect 'warp'

Don't know thing one about Cinema, so I'll take a stab in the dark.

A good way to fake it would be Self-Illumination map. Kinda like what DB said.

Not sure, but I think you can also do it with the Bump map. In PS, run Clouds/Difference and use try that for starters. If I'm not mistaken, the Bump map will affect the reflections.

edit: Just did some real quick fiddling. I think you best bet would be Self-Illumination or add it to the Diffuse. Either way, add it like DB says.

edit2: Duh! Render in passes. I'm such an idiot. No time now. Back later to explain.

What I would do is:
Take several pictures- in this case, such things as marble and then for distortion trees- breaks whatever.
Blend them together for whatever fits
Merge them
Then use Brightness/contrast to set the right tone(replace color; even)
Transform
Then lighting effects.

Concerning what pictures you use and brightness/contrast results will definately vary:P

It looks a lot like the filters (they're the work of the devil, I tell you!) [filter>render>clouds] and [filter>sketch>chrome] are just right for this job. (run them in that order and see if that's what you fancy)

I'm colour blind right now so I can't be of any real help beyond what's been said.

I cannot remember where this image came from, but if you're relatively skilled with texturing, I believe you could put this to good use. Think bump , or maybe reflection on top of raytrace? yeah that might work better.....
