I've been trying to get to the site for a few weeks now with no luck. I've been trying other sites, but they turn up 404.

Is it gone?
Anybody else have them?
Anybody archive them?

<just reminiscing>
Back in the day, when I first started my job, I had never seen PS before. I had kinda heard of it, kinda knew a little bit about what people said it could do, but had never seen it.
First day on the job I was asked if I knew PS
"Of course -- I've been using it since 3.0..."
Oh shit! What did I just do?!? Hit the internet, google search "Photoshop tips" Kai's Power Tips and Tricks was the very first thing I ever did with Photoshop...printed every single one of those. Still have them, I do, in a nice little file...a reminder of long ago.
Goddamn that seems like a long time ago.....

DB, I don't know why there is an error with the PDF...maybe I should zip it?
could be a Mac thing?

Anyone else having trouble opening it?

Try this 3 meg PDF zipped.
It's the same Kai's Tips and Tricks for Photoshop file just zipped.
Looks like there may be compression issues and possibly corruption on uploading PDFs to my server without compression.

If I compress it using ZipIT for Mac it is corrupt...if I use Suffit to make a zip archive it is ok on my end.
Anyhow try the new one and if it doesn't work maybe someone else who has it can post it.

*crosses fingers*
cheers

Well, I'm glad you saved that, I archived a copy here on my server, just in case. ;-) I grabbed the first ZIP link on my PC and had no problems, does anyone need it as a SIT file for the mac? Kai really did something special back then with these tips, magic it was! (Note: All of these cool effects were done prior to Layers and all those good things, neat!) I do wonder though, what's up with Kai? This net-wide blackout of his tips does not bode well. If we have any AOL users, check around and see if they're available there, that's where they were first posted.

Your pal, -doc-

Hmm, Kai's been hiding out in Germany, just finishing a one year embargo on press and publicity, building a place called "Byteburg". German readers can learn more at http://www.byteburg.de/ - do me a favor and tell me what's going on, would'ya?

(edit) Ah! I found a more indepth presentation, using flash, in both english and german. Sounds cool, see http://www.byteburg.de/betabook/ - mebbe I'll move to germany?

!!!!!

edit :whew: 3.3 megs in 455 objects. Not that I don't appreciate the PDF, but having HTML version archived is nice as well.

Doc, I did some looking at those links and gave up. I couldn't read the english flash on site, so I had to resort to C&P. After about 15 minutes of that, I gave up.

What's really weird is that I'm not just getting 404, but whole sites are gone. Looks like Pixel Foundry.com bit the dust along with a few others.

Oh bless you Doc for that link to ByteBurg. I've searched periodically for what Kai's been up to - never found anything. Ahhh, reading that, I "heard" Kai's voice in my head again and it was just so refreshing.

Like Mobrul, Kai was my Photoshop and internet epiphany. I had all the tips printed too. I got Photoshop and my first modem (1,200 baud I think, and version 2.5 of Photoshop!!) when the internet was young and the "web"as we know it really was an infant, entirely invisible to the general public. The Photoshop community on AOL, personified by Kai, was electrifying for me. I distinctly remember reading the entirety of the "Blue Sky" folder, archived at that point, and suddenly "understanding" what the revolutionary potential of the internet was. This was a community, a community of people in different cities, counties, time zones .... It suddenly dawned on me. I remember reading the pages in my car at lunch. I vividly remember sharing the excitement of this discovery with a friend during a long, late night drive to Maine. I mostly remember feeling like someone had lifted aside a curtain, feeling like I had been living in one small room, unaware of the rest of the mansion on the other side of the curtain!!

Wow. Got a little carried away there I guess. But really - I've been really curious what he had been up to since splitting from MetaCreations. I heard he was working on cognitive studies withthe aim of a new operating system, rumors rumors. Fun stuff, the book. And the institute or whatever it is at the castle ... hmmmm.

Many thanks, kromaZ. The .zip works fine.

Very cool.

I haven`t read too much of Kai`s book yet, but is that the same PHP thingy Weadz uses to reload the same page with text in flash format ?

warjournal - just so you can sleep at night - they're all still tucked away at AOL.

If you ever lose your collection, make friends with someone with an AOL account!

Wow. I have to say they downloaded faster today with a cable modem then they did "back in the day" over a 1200 baud phone line modem

well, know I know what I'll do once I finish school.
Right, I'll pay Kai a visit!
It's only like a 2-3 hour drive..., and maybe, I'll talk myself into a job... well, I can try :-)

Met him once, Cebit (looking at meta creations 'powershow' advertisement with his signature) 199X, when they pushed their powershow thingy. Man was I an impressonable kid back then :-)

It's good to find out what happened to Kai. I have periodically been poking around looking for him on the web, but this is the first thing I have found. I'm sure that whatever ends up coming out of byteburg will be as incredible as everything else he has done.
Thanks for the links.
