I don't know of any that are specifically an explanation of channels, and it is a little tough to get the concept at first (if you;re not used to dealing with such things).

Perhaps if you show us the tutorial you were trying and what/where you got screwed up, we can be more help. It is quite possible - and I have ssen many times - that the problem lies with negelcting to swtich from the channels pallette back to the layers pallette at the right time rather than an issue with the channels themselves?

DL, I agree with you in that it's usually unclear what pallette you need to be on in many tutorials.

I'm no expert and it takes time to get the concept of channels and everyday I learn something new about them. The tutorials that made clearer for me (and you may have seen these already) are:

http://www.handson.nu/HTML/lightfx.shtml

and

http://www.handson.nu/HTML/glass/

I should point out that I usually end up doing the tutorials 2 or 3 times before I even get close to what the it's trying to teach. Very often, if no one gives you a suggested size to start your project with the values for filter and modifications will throw your version off the map. Go large.. it's easier to size down than up.

Maybe these will help, too.
