The logo is pretty good.

Since you are new I am going to throw some advice out that you probabally don't want to hear, throw togeather another 2 or 3 banners for the same project and come back and show us those as well. Give us a little more to look at so we could give you a little more. Go crazy with it and show us what you have.

Well, as I look at it more, I think you could have done a better job of cropping the soldier, you cut off a bit of his head. You could stand to lose more of his/her (could be a really butch girl) legs in order to have the complete head and hat in the photo.

First things you want to check out are listed at the bottom of every page here - Hands-On, and the Gurus Network.

After you've had some time to check those out, and try out some new things on your logo, come on back.

As far as the posted logo is concerned, there's not really much to say. It's the basic kind of thing you see on many of those types of sites, and is quite lacking in most respects.

Seeing as you seem to have accepted that fact already, you hopefully won't take that the wrong way.

Some things to keep in mind as yo go through those tutorials and try new things with the logo -

- Composition. Things need to be layed out with some sort of purpose and balance. No good design is randomly thrown together.

- Focus. There needs to be a clear visual focal point in any logo. There needs to be something to draw the attention and make the eye move through the image, otherwise it;s just a waste of space and bandwidth.

- Identity. This needs to tell us in no uncertain terms who you are and what you do.

Hope that helps a little...

quick tip - a logo doesn't usually have a photo. it is more conceptual. some sort of silhouette or outline of a soldier would work better, in my opinion.

other than that - listen to those 2 guys, they seem to have some sort of idea of what they're going on about.

I think the most glaring difficulty you're facing there is a complete lack of consideration for color interaction and mechanics of the design.

On the color front it's really washed out and dead looking, not much contrast at all and the interaction of the colors togetherr is almost nil, not monochrome but gettin there fast.

The machanics of it (for lack of a better, more educated term), with the multitude of angles you have going there on your text and big oval you're going to run into jaggies, the horizontal lines are only going to accentuate that, and the double embossed thing even moreso.

I would say by the looks of it you've been through a few tutorials as you've mentioned. Just keep messing around with tutorials and on your own and you'll soon have techniques at your disposal that you can whip out when the situation warrants. It's nice to know how to do what you see in your had, that comes with practice and study, which it sounds like you may be into it so: great things are expected from you this time next year

If I recall correctly, Doc started with a font, and took it into illustrator to alter the paths into what he wanted.

There are a ton of ways to get whatever shape you might want though - head to the Photoshop Tutorials at the Gurus Network. In particular, take a look at "Making the shapes you need" and the "Intorduction to the Pen Tool".
