Preserved Topic: URGENT help needed: Batch converting TIFF to JPEG

Hey hey,

OK, I'm sitting on 1000+ TIFF files I need to convert to JPEGs within 3 hours.

The problem: From everything I can tell, Photoshop 7.0 prompts you for optimization settings for the JPEG any time you try to automate an action to batch-convert TIFFs to JPEGs. With 1000+ files to convert, I can't do that.

I ordered "Advanced Batch Converter" online but the company is taking up to 48 hours to send me the serial # and I can't wait any longer. Calls to their office go into voice mail. I've tried a few other shareware proggies, but they're mostly made for Web design and the JPEG quality ***Xors.


Anyone have a solution for this?

I need to:

1) Do the highest quality conversion from TIFF to JPEG as is possible (these are stock photos for a pro CD that might be used print quality).

2) Overwrite the original files in their directories or subdirectories **or** create a new file tree that matches the original heirarchy. Duplicate files are OK as long as they're in the same directory, in which case I can delete the originals myself after the JPEGs are created.

3) Do this all in the next 3 hours.

hmmm... Seems urgent to you, but I am not as sure how urgent it is to me. In the future you might want to just ask the question, and let it ride.

Through here you won't get much urgent help, it tends to make us not want to visit a thread.

But along with the helping spirit, have you thought about running an action to do the conversions for you? Might work? I have never had to worry about batch conversions, maybe I will try a run through if I get some time later.

You have to realize that a lot of us here have jobs we have to do as well.

No problem - I wasn't trying to make it urgent for **you.** It **is** just urgent to me.

Not trying to insult anyone or light a fire under their pants - I'm getting squeezed by a deadline, as I am quite sure everyone here has at some point or another.

Since this is a help forum, I am just looking for help. We're here to help people and get help, right?

I am just hoping marking it urgent will help convey that it's something I need to get done ASAP. Anyone that can't help is free to pass it by (and I'm sure they will).

As always HELP is GREATLY APPRECIATED and not assumed.

i believe the cripple on the demo only allows so many pictures to be processed at a time
so watch out for that
or you could buy it with credit card and it is worth it, imho

Scoott, are you trying to use save for web or using save as.

I gave it a try with Save AS and it worked just fine, on PS7 win.

I did the following:

a. Load a dummy image, and record an action

b. Image mode RGB // Necessary incase any images are Index, or Grayscale.

c . Save As "jpeg" //load an image, and save to the batch output folder, with the setting as needed.

d. Now go to batch and set up as normal makeing sure to check suppress color profile warning, and override action "Save As" commands. This will also the "Save As" commands located in the action used.

If this is something you may do offen, might want to look into the photoshop scripting plug-in, I think there is a formate convert example that could be modified, it is javascript based and very easy to use. I also noticed that there is a prebuilt droplet, in the samples folder. It say's medium compression but work taking a look at.

You might also what to look into a program called IMatch, it is an image managment system. It can do batch converts and many other functions, includes a scripting language.

Thanks, I'll try that. - I may have been using the "save and close" option, but I think I also tried "save as..."

I am also using ThumbNailer v7.11 as WarMage suggested, and it's working great - VERY fast, and it does what many programs won't:

Creates a new folder with a matching heirarchy to the first, so nothing needs to be overwritten but you get the same exact folder tree.

(official count is 1,776 images I need to convert - yikes!)

It only took about 7-10 minutes to convert 900 of those @ 85% quality, with files up to 1900 pixels wide.

Just to add to the suggested software (I realize you don't need it now, but..what the hell =), I use Thumbs Plus form Cerious Software for a lot of these kinds of things, and love it. As a total package, I haven't seen anything I like better.
