I have a picture of my car and I would like to edit out the background, I would also like to know how to put another picture over the top of the "base" picture sort of transparent. I have Photoshop 6.0 and I am very inexperienced with this program. Thanks for the help

ok first off... getting rid of the background on your car... masks... its one of the small little icons on the bottom of the layers window... click that paint black to get rid of stuff white to bring it back...

for the putting another picture on top just copy (ctrl A) (ctrl C) paste it onto the other one (ctrl V) and then to mess with the transparency its on the top of the layers window... just slide the bar over...

Click this icon on the bottom of the Layers Pallette ( a white square will appear next to the thumbnail, and the same icon will appear next to the little eyeball ) and then, with the paintbrush, paint black over the parts you wish to remove. If you paint too much of it, paint the parts you wish to see with white.
Then, when you get it right, drag your new photo into the document, and click the mask icon again. Hold CTRL and click the mask you just made ( to select it) and fill with black.

Does that help ?

thank you, i understand that now. But another problem that i ran in to is that it looks like crap, after i trace around the car. Is there some sort of way to change the pixels, I zoomed in when I was tracing and just doesn't look very clean. Do I just have to go really slow or what is the deal?

Thanks

option 1 - yes, be more careful when painting

option 2 - see this thread also regarding the pen tool.

thank you that makes a little more sense, but is there a way to change the pixel size, because I can't get a very clear image when I zoom in, and therefore it is hard to trace around.

You can't change the pixel size in the manner that you're thinking. Zoom in and paint some, then zoom out and check the image... Zoom in, zoom out, zoom in, zoom out...

It takes a little longer, but you'll be more pleased with your efforts... You might also try painting with soft-edged brush to get a little bit of feather in the edges of the mask.

...oh yes !
...and you'll feel dizzy like a "member" on a sexual relation, of course ...

But you can FEATHER the final results.
Look for that on Photoshop Manual or on Help/Search...
