Summer's coming, time to get in shape! Lemme see some muscles.

1. You have approximately 30 minutes (try to limit differences by 10 mins, give or take) to do a sketch/painting/model, digital or traditional of the supplied topic.
2. Time dedicated to scanning, uploading, saving, etc, is NOT counted towards the time it takes you to do your entry. Just the time you spent creating it.
3. You can submit as many entries as you want.
4. Much like the monthly sig competitions, the previous winner decides the next topic and the next winner of said topic.
5. Speed painting topics will last for approximately a week.
6. Have fun!

Ok, at least they semi relate. And please forgive their overall shittyness.

Old one, I did it in math, and quickly colored it just now in 3 minutes
I was originally gunna do a body-builder, but it turned into this. WARNING SLIGHT NUDITY. I had a referance and everything of an over-steroid pumped woman, but...
I did this when I saw the topic theme. Inspired, maybe. Hopefully that means that my subconsious though it was muscely-realted enough.

Anyways, either I have really low self-confidence/esteem or these all suck ass. Please forgive me. Ok, fine, so I know that the former is true, but I'm debating about the latter.

Ruski: Use an image hosting service. DeviantArt takes about a minute to load those over cable. A minute to load any picture over 56 would be fine, but DA is slow beyond belief.

Still, amazing. Actually, is it hard using a touchpad? I've always though it would be kind-of akin to just using a tablet.

I just had a quick tip for InSiDeR:

Your anatomy looks good, as do your proportions, but your figures still retain that, err, boxy look. In other words, they don't look fluid. I think it was DG that said to draw the human body as a bunch of curves. Look at figure referance sites, or the nude referance thread over at Conceptart.org. Real people look very: "fluid."

Just a thought. I've tryed to impliment it in my figures. And they look better since I started doing it.

You mean the chest? Oh that was a waste, I just added that so I could add another arm, I didn't really focus much on the anatomy of the chest.

I was going for a convict look anyway .

Insider: Start reading those anatomy links. Study them hard, and see if you can get your hands on a book or two. Burne Hogarth is a great choice. Gray's Anatomy is always a personal fave. Your sketches look like play-doh people right now. Once you sort out the anatomy, then you can work on lighting. It'll be a first big step.

Enthusiasm is wonderful, but it needs to be metered with progress, not plateaus.

InSiDeR: The online copy of Gray's Anatomy should be what you need to get started (its possibly one of the most important and influential books ever published) start here:
www.bartleby.com/107/index.html#chap5

The site DL posted is interesting in this regard as it can help you get the muscles in the arms looking more realistic - you can browse the thumbnails here:

NO, whatever you do never get any comic art, it wont teach you shit! trust me I have been throu this!

books are always good, Hogarth stuff is great...but if someone really wants to learn human figure good...books wont teach you good or fast enough....I suggest you take classes on human figure, drawing nudes in diffrent perspective and possitions helps alot!
thats the best way to learn how to capture the shape fast, second most inportant thing is to learn light and shadow technique like DL uses on his sketches, its very important cause thats the only way you can add volume to your figure ....comics are flat wont teach you shit, never draw comics for learning....always study fine arts, the comics gonna be childs play soon enough for you

.

insider - do not underestimate the necessity of reference, especially in regard to anatomy (and not just human anatomy) any type of animal or creature you draw needs to have a plausible anatomy. The arm you posted has what I've been fond of calling 'fish fillet syndrom'. Basically it looks like someone has draped a large fillet on top of the mans arm and hidden the detail of the actual muscle Now, I've seen far worse, and by people who have no excuse to make such errors, so don't take this as an insult.

It's simply an area that needs some real work.

(also don't forget that when you need reference for hands, you have two of them your self )
