Posted a question there about learning web design at school. General concensus there was *teach self/waste of money/not totally bad idea.*
Was referred to you as leading expert on school learnins. So far it`s been a little frustrating just researching schools. one admissions *pro* said (in a VERY cheery voice) Yes we have a one day course on web design (US)@ $25. (Doesn`t sound very comprehensive to me.) Another said * Not sure what we have Maybe you should wait till the new course catalouge comes out next month and check it.* (O.K.) Yet another wants to teach me HTML,FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks. Their Javascript classes consist of *not inventing the wheel, javascript`s out there, we`ll teach you how to make the wheel work for you*(seems like a cheesy approach to Me)
this is getting kind of long winded so I`ll stop here.
Just for info, I`ve been a carpenter forever
and feel the need to move on. Love PhotoShop (only 5.0 Trial,so far), the HTML I`ve taught myself so far, and problem solving.
Thoughts ? Advise? Tips ? Pitfalls?

I can tell when I`m being ignored. If you`d rather not reply, just say so, and I`ll delete it.

P.S. Hope you got your bed back, and things are returning to *normal*

Hey, hey, hey...hold on a sec there bob.

The doc is a very busy man. i know it has been at least 15 days since oyu posted this thread (it was my birthday), but give a guy a break.

We don't ignore people here. If you want to get known earier, go post in the ozone forum, as the script stating that there is a new topic here doesn't seem to work sometimes.

So chill out, have fun.

Welcome to the board BTW <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

Yeah, the career forum isn't visited very often by many people, sorry! Give the "Ozone" forum a shot. He's more likely to see it there.

I personally have no advice for you in that area, I'm still in my Senior year in HS...

this is one of the 2 or 3 sites I visit everyday. Love the attitude here.
And for clarification, I really do hope things in his life are smoothing out.

Yah, ever since we started all the new forum areas several months back, it gets harder and harder to view everything, heh. I tend to spend most of my time further up the list in the first five forums. Geez, where to start indeed? Many of these "learn web design in 5 days!" courses will only train you to be second rate, at best. Now, you don't *need* to be second rate, if you choose to do this part as only the first step! Depending on how much (or how little!) you know, a basic primer course like this could be a good thing, as long as you go into it knowing it's not going to teach you everything you really need to know. Still, a good start for a beginner.

What kind of classes would I want to take? I'd target one of the community colleges where you can just take individual courses instead of a total "program". Here are the kinds of things I'd track down.

  1. Basic "101" Graphic Design course. This doesn't even need to be computer oriented, it can be with paper, markers, what have you. How does design work? What are the basic tenets of design? Compostion, typography, colors, etc...
  2. Intro to Business Practices (Small Business) - If you're going to do this for a job, someone else can jandle this part. If you're going to start as freelance (most of us do), you'll need to know a few things about how to run a business, contracts, billables, etc...
  3. Basic HTML course. They exist. Some of them are actually pretty good. Shoot for one that will actually teach you HTML as opposed to (one of the) graphical editors.
  4. Basic Photoshop. These exist also. You want to jump start your basic knowledge of the program, as opposed to learning all the coolest new filters. This is basic stuff that you
  5. need
  6. to know.
  7. Javascript? Perl? Java? You will want to learn as much of these as you can handle. You might be best taking an introduction to OOP (Object Oriented Programming) after you learn the Javascript part.
  8. More as needed...

I like the idea of choosing your coursework on this piece by piece method, you'll learn more if you learn what you want to and eliminate the silly stuff. That's my take, anyway!

Thanks loads, Doc. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif"> Really appreciate the input. Also, thanks for what you`re doing here and over at GN. I`ve learned more here in a few weeks than in a few months of trial and error on my own.
Ever consider opening a school in your spare time ? (hehe) there`s a pretty intense concentration of talent wrapped up in these two BB`s.
