I was just wondering........if I wanted to make a web page or interface for the web how do I make it so it will fit to the page. Do I just go by pixel size or what?.............Don't make me open up trellix or frontpage, hehe.

You must use tables with relative sizes (in percents), but thare's much more than that (especially if we start talking about cross-browser issues)...

Ok can someone tell me how big I need to make the image or interface...not sure what I should be calling it? Can I do the sizing in PS? I just want it to take up the whole browser like any other web page.

Look Chad - the more you do of this, the more you will come to realize that you have asked a question to which there are no easy answers. Viewers have different sized monitors, viewers have their browser windows set to different sizes, some viewers like big navigation buttons, some have them minimized to just text .... you have to learn that, unlike designing a brochure or a magazine page, on the web the viewer controls the size of their "page", not you.

But .... you asked a fair question and you should get a fair answer. Here's a technique that will at least make it look good in *your* window! First, tell yourself that you have a lot to learn yet. Second, launch your browser. Third, do a screen capture. I don't know how to do that in Windows, but I'm sure it's simple. On a Mac it's command+shift+3. Fourth, open that screen capture in Photoshop, and the area below the address bar and above the status bar is what you have to work with. Now you can start designing the interface in Photoshop. You will still need to know how to cut the elements apart and put 'em back together with html, but at least you can be pretty certain it will all "fit". At least for your set up.

Later it will get hairier. But now at least you have a point of departure.

There's a key right to the right of F12, "print screen". That will copy the screen to your Windows clipboard. Then you open Photoshop, press ctrl+n, press enter, then press ctrl+v - point of departure, tear it up chadster

decide on a resolution.. (screen size) 800 x 600 pixels, 1024 x 768 pixels, or not so common anymore is 640 x 480.

ok.. decided?.. good... now take some off the one you chose. For ex.. if you chose 800 x 600 pixels as a design size.. make you canvas about 760 x 540.. or similar.. (not bigger). This allows for the browsers edges, menu bars, and vertical scroll bar.

Also bare in mind that many people dont surf the web viewing websites with their browsers maximized to full screen, so even if you design to a certain size the viewer still may not see it the way yuo designed it. (This can be done my an automatic detect and window resize but I wouldnt advise it.. its a personal hateof mine when some designer resizes my window without my persmission.. grrrr)

That all said and done... experiment, play, practice.. try different sizes out, and learn as you go.. thats the best way imho...

Lastly.. when creating a new canvas try and stick to a ppi of 72 for your canvas resolution... is really as high as needed for web graphics.. more and generally your just increasing file sizes for noo quality gain.

just to clarify on VP's statement - you need to allow alot more space on the vertical aspect of it - I have my browser pretty trimmed at the top, and I'm still looking at 100 pixels there, and another 25-30 at the bottom...so if you were aiming for 800x600, you'd have to go for more like 650x575 or so......but then you also have to keep in mind that people run resolutions of 1600x1200...and how's it gonna look then? But of course, that's the hairy part Steve reffered to (or.....was steve reffering to *his* hairy part?)

Have you all used bookmarklets? They're small JavaScript progs that you can stor in your bookmark file that do amazing things. A whole class of them just resize your window to certain standard sizes. So you just pick a favorite off your menu to resize to 640, 800, full screen, etc. Drastic timesaver for me when trying to figure out what people are seeing (without changing my own video mode).
