Hello everyone.

Could some of you please give me some quick run-downs of the major pro's and con's about
using Vignette?

The reason that I'm asking is that I'm helping a firend of mine whose client is considering using Vignette for their new solutions and they want a more unbiased picture than what they get from the Vignette salespeople.

I've got the impression that it's a good platform, but real expensive and a nightmare to work with.
The admin tools I've seen for Vignette systems have been horrendous (both of them).

Any views on this?

ThanX a million

Could you answer something as simple as why you are interested in Vignette? I think if you answer that we would be able to help you with a better focused answer.

Sorry, but I have not very much information.

A friend of mine is working as a consultant for a couple of large companies. The work is regarding evaluating
present web-solutions and helping them with the project definition for new projects.

He's currently speaking with a global company that is considering using Vignette as their new Content Management solution. (the customers initiative. reason: They've heard about Vignette as a big player)

Nor my friend or myself has vey much experience with Vignette, and his problem is that he have so far only got
information from Vignette themselves. They - naturally - think that their system is the best thing since sliced bread.

What he's looking for is general opinions from people who have actually worked with a Vignette solution to get some feeling about the implementations process (work like charm or living hell), system maintenance (Need Bill Gates wallet or reasonable) and comments about how the people actually working with the CM system as a content provider see it.
(smooth operator or SAP interface and structure).

also: really general terms about what you think of it from an administrative view.

Sorry I can't provide any exact question, but that's what I have. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Ahh StoryServer my bread and butter.

As a large scale Content Management Sytem it's not bad.
Pro's
It's highly scaleable and actually quite flexible. It actually outputs flat-files so it's not too hard on the server.
good for an extremely high volumne site.

Cons'
It uses a fairly random language for it's main Scripting Language (TcL) It's not hard to learn but it's a bit of a pain in the ass. Rumor has it that future versions will support other languages.

Dev time. Don't expect a 3 month dev cycle to get up and running this thing takes a while.

Personally It really depends on what the user wants and how it is configured. My work site was spawned off of another site's Vignette instance (we were originally part of their File Sytem) so we have a crap-load of code intended for purposes different from ours which makes things a bit clunky for us. but it's stable and been around for a while (trivia: it was developed as Cnets CMA and then spawned off into it's own company) It is going to continue getting better especially if it starts to support other languages. if you have the resources ($$$ and people) it's a good system.

If you have any more specific questions I'll try to answer them.
