Preserved Topic: MS SQL 7 db restore problem

Hi.
(Me=seriously NOT experienced with MS SQL...)

I've got a backup of a MS SQL 6.5 database that I need to get up and running on my new dev machine with MSSQL 7.0.
So, I create the database (no tables, nada) then I try to do a restore from a device (.bak-file), this is what I get:

The dababase you are trying to restore was backed up under a different sortorder (ID 52) than the one currently running on this server (185) and at least one of them is a non-binary sort order. Backup operation terminated abnormally.

Naturally I voice some carefully selected words... and then try to find out how to change the sort order on this local installation...

?!?!? I can't find any way to do that.
Can I do that (change the sort order without reinstalling MS SQL) on my machine?

note, I have no way to get at the old db, the machine was scrapped after the backups was taken...

MSSS 6.5 and 7.0 are very different code bases - 6.5 is NT-only, 7.0 is win32... I would opt for restoring the 6.5 DB and migrating the data (The SQL Server migration-path tool) to the 7.0 DB. I mean after all, that's what the tool is for. It's beena couple years for me, but I think if you look at the tool, you'll even see an option for 6.5 databases.

I know this is bad news, but IMO it's your most reliable and expedient choice, unless there's some obscure 6.5 restore option within the realm of 7.0.

If I'm getting you correctly, I should restore it onto a MSSQL 6.5 server, then, from there I migrate it to 7.0? Or...

I'll take a look at it again tonight and see what I can do.

Yeah - but they should be on separate machines - I don't think SS 6.5
and 7.0 get along well together on the same machine.... they can be installed, but
not running simutaneously (As I recollect).
